Before iPods (or even CDs) there were boomboxes. It's been 20 years since they disappeared from the streets, but the nostalgia they evoke is about more than stereo equipment. We've changed the way we listen to music — and to each other. Watch a video about the history of the boombox. Damn, I want one of those now.

*looks up the price of the classic ones*

Ok, maybe I don't want it that much. Still, lovely memories of being an 80s kid and the stores having rows of these things lined up. There was always someone you knew who had a really nice one that sounded as good as it looked.

Sagemindsays...

HA HA,
I had a Big-Ass Black JVC with a 10 switch Eq and a chrome telescoping antenna.
It had AM, FM, SW & SW2 Radio bands (I swear I got a Russian station one night on short wave).
Two tape, high speed dubbing and speakers that detached when you put the handle down.
It took Eight D-cell batteries!

I took it with me everywhere. And everyone got to listen along with me! (circa 1986-87).
I think it cost me about $350 back then.
