Most non-westernized Asians have this notion of

"these westerners are always trying to undermine me and think less of me because we tend to be timid and physically smaller than them"

kind of mentality. You see this a lot in newly transfered Asian students who purposely pick fights in schools to prove that they're tough.

I guess Ang Lee went a bit too far with his paranoia.
