Disney's Maleficent - "Dream" Trailer

Terrific, just what we need, another re-hash of an old story, complete with CGI borrowed from Lord of the rings etc. I understand the insatiable nature of the beast that is "entertainment," but it seems the beast is dying at the feet of repetition, banality and money. In the producers defence, original concepts are becoming increasingly rare.

Everything is derivative.

Having said that, I am genuinely surprised at how well Jolie looks in this role. The last preview seemed to be dark and sinister but this just escalated her playful evilness 10x.

Life requires constant iteration, despite the human brain tiring of the process every step of the way. The ideas which are overdone are the mountains and the things not done enough are valleys and plains.

I think it's unavoidable as a pattern in all things, and potentially a requirement to advance past thought. Building up, building up, building up; like a levvy about to flood over and destroy the city so that it can be rebuilt with better ideas.

Don't fight the pattern, learn to manipulate it and iterate within the boundaries of society in a meaningful way. To complain about what is and always will be is pointless.

Yes, yes... Everything is derivative and good artists borrow while great artists steal, etc. etc.
It doesn't excuse the creation of something that's a dark reboot of a property that was already a retelling of an existing property, using themes and tropes already well-known by the moderately-educated public, and that's not even including the fact that "dark reboots" themselves are old-hat in today's entertainment world.
The film looks great, but you can make anything look great with the right team of creators. It might be entertaining, and there is nothing at all wrong with that, but the soul of the film will always fail to achieve what an otherwise derivative work that legitimately offers unique twists or elements of its own, (in general terms: wholly new and creative!) and that is why people shit on this kind of production.

For a moment I thought I'd had a reply from James Joyce. Very colourful prose my friend, though, sadly, you say little. The only sentence I can comment on is your last one; " To complain about what is and always will be is pointless." It is not only a totally false assertion but, also, a non-sequitur as nothing is "is" and "always." Everything is in flux and, as such, changes. This applies to all aspects of life, including entertainment.

I think I might like this film. Stories will always be retold and that has always been the way in entertainment. Think about it before movies it would be theatre. How many times do you think Hamlet has been performed since it was written?
