DON'T GET HURT: Federal Medication Ban

What if you were injured and developed severe pain that wouldn't go away? Would your government let you take the kind of pain medication you need? If federal officials follow the recommendation of a Food and Drug Administration panel, many of the most effective prescription painkillers—including Vicodin, Percocet, and countless generics—would be banned.

Seems like this video is mixing up the arguments a bit. The panel recommends getting rid of acetaminophen because of potential liver damage...I don't think the rate of addiction was their rationale, although it's hard to tell from the way it's presented here. There are certainly alternatives to acetaminophen...so it's not like their recommendation even leaves you without effective pain meds.

That said, I don't really support banning any medication that has solid proof of its effectiveness. I certainly support full disclosure of the risks, but that's a different issue.

I call BULLSHIT

My guess is this is a hit piece on the FDA by the makers of Tylenol. You see Tylenol is 100% acetaminophen, but they don't mention Tylenol in this piece because they don't want you to link Tylenol with liver damage. They instead go after Vicodin and Percocet because they contain acetaminophen along with hydrocodone, which is the ingredient which truly kills the pain. The fact is if they ban acetaminophen you could still be prescribed Vicoprofen which contains ibuprofen instead of acetaminophen, or Percodan which contains aspirin. Also Acetaminophen overdose is a pretty common occurrence down at your local ER.

^ I'm not so sure it's necessarily corporate backed, but that would make sense too.

According to the articles I found on the FDA ruling, the FDA was worried about inadvertent overdoses of acetaminophen, which is why they banned the combination drugs. If you still need the effect of Vicodin, now you just have to take two separate pills instead of one.

So basically, this guy needs to sue his doctor, not do infomercials for professional political activist organizations.
