1 Week without technology - Forbes editor cries

The Managing Editor of Forbes tried to go a week without using the internet, his Blackberry and his cellphone. It was obviously too much for him to take.
It's amazing how much we now rely on modern technology.

How do you manage Farhad? Mine broke the other month and I felt like I'd lost a limb. Although it was actually quite liberating not being contactable for a while.

E-mail and home telephone, which I usually don't answer, just *69 incoming calls to see if it's important. And it is liberating, having a mobile phone feels like your are at the behest of other people, at least it did to me.

Wow, he actually cried. I thought it was metaphorical, lol. Last year when we moved we were without internet for about a month. What fresh hell that was!
I hate to say it, but after the second week..I was walking the dogs more, and reading more books...Experiencing sunlight was nice..

I can live without a cellphone, it's the net (and my EVDO, data connection anywhere) that I need. I am finally acknowledging that when travelling, it's good to have a paper itinerary printed out.. laptop loses power at the worst possible times. You can't go running for a flight if you don't know the # cuz your battery is dead

I think there are wider implications beyond just feeling a bit liberated. I remember reading this excellent article on how the penetration of hand held devices such as blackberries, cellphones and laptops actually lower the person's general level of awareness, or concentration when doing a particular task.

Applying those ideas to my interaction with my peers does indeed show that, my friend with the blackberry is forever beholden to his working position, because he has to be available all the time, when I see it mostly as the failure of his underlings to get anything done on their own. Same with people who use mobiles.

But then if I follow my line of thinking I tend to sound like Ted "Unambomber" Kazynck.

i used to text allllllllllll the time with my cell ... so much so that i actually wore the numbers/letters off the keypad! i then moved on to the sidekick II. BIGGER! BETTER!

then i quit cold turkey and haven't looked back ... it's been over 2 years now. if you don't know my home number - there's a reason!
