Obama's Hypnotism Techniques Revealed

#obscure is for "video clips from the music, animation and movie world".

#meme is for shit like all these nyan cat videos that are flooding in lately.

#lies, oddly enough, is not for lies, but rather for truthiness. There's some questionable nonsense in this video, but nothing which I would say definitely fits.

But I feel like this video has done more to put me in a trance than anything by Obama. Then again, maybe that just means Obama is better at it.

Hey ghandi, remember me, the crazy guy with the crazy idea? I switched majors to biology but I keep on keeping on with the dreaming. Chemistry is a lot more interesting than a state university's current idea of computer science. My wait-and-see attitude, coupled with my tendency to only do things i enjoy, lets me stick to projects where I can make personally satisfactory progress. Other people will have to complete the LDP as I sort of always knew.

Method of identifying topic of text using nouns

Abstract
A method of identifying a topic of a text. Text is received. Then, the nouns in the text are identified. The singular form of each identified noun is determined. Combinations are created of the singular form of the identified nouns, where the number of singular forms of the nouns in the combinations is user-definable. The frequency of occurrence in the text of each noun that corresponds to its singular form is determined. Each frequency of occurrence is assigned as a score to its corresponding singular form noun. Each combination of singular form nouns is assigned a score that is equal to the sum of the scores of its constituent singular form nouns. The user-definable number of top scoring singular form nouns and combinations of singular form nouns are selected as the topic of the text.

Modeling public mood and emotion: Twitter sentiment and socio-economic phenomena
Authors: Johan Bollen, Alberto Pepe, Huina Mao
(Submitted on 9 Nov 2009)

Abstract: Microblogging is a form of online communication by which users broadcast brief text updates, also known as tweets, to the public or a selected circle of contacts. A variegated mosaic of microblogging uses has emerged since the launch of Twitter in 2006: daily chatter, conversation, information sharing, and news commentary, among others. Regardless of their content and intended use, tweets often convey pertinent information about their author's mood status. As such, tweets can be regarded as temporally-authentic microscopic instantiations of public mood state. In this article, we perform a sentiment analysis of all public tweets broadcasted by Twitter users between August 1 and December 20, 2008. For every day in the timeline, we extract six dimensions of mood (tension, depression, anger, vigor, fatigue, confusion) using an extended version of the Profile of Mood States (POMS), a well-established psychometric instrument. We compare our results to fluctuations recorded by stock market and crude oil price indices and major events in media and popular culture, such as the U.S. Presidential Election of November 4, 2008 and Thanksgiving Day. We find that events in the social, political, cultural and economic sphere do have a significant, immediate and highly specific effect on the various dimensions of public mood. We speculate that large scale analyses of mood can provide a solid platform to model collective emotive trends in terms of their predictive value with regards to existing social as well as economic indicators.

Professional Wrestling hasn't presented itself as real for a couple decades now. Something a lot of you seem to forget. Remember it's called World Wrestling Entertainment.

It's called World Wrestling Entertainment because the World Wildlife Fund sucessfully sued their asses back in 2000. They didn't change it for any altruistic "truthy" ideals.

Seriously? It's been well known for years it's not real, they haven't pretended for years it's not real, and you are going to continue down this path? <sigh> Only a moron would think it was real, and only a moron would continue to call FAKE every time they see a clip from it.

Chomsky on Post-Midterm America

Bidouleroux says...

The Top 200 Chomsky Lies

I love how they label the nuanced statements of Chomsky as "The Lie" and their half-truthy reinterpretation of them as "The Truth".

Example:

The Lie: “I have never considered myself a ‘Marxist,’ and in fact regard such notions as
‘Marxist’ (or ‘Freudian,’ etc.) as belonging more to the domain of organized religion than of
rational analysis.”

The Truth: Previously, Chomsky had said: “in my opinion, a Marxist-anarchist perspective
[on politics] is justified quite apart from anything that may happen in linguistics.” He had also
declared: “I wouldn’t abandon Marxism.”

Here's the last quote in context, from a printed interview and thus easily cited out of context:
"[Chomsky:] [...] But I don't see any reason to abandon the notion anarchism just because it has some strange periphery that uses it [namely, the right-wing anarcho-capitalists].
[Interviewer:] Just as you wouldn't abandon Marxism.
[Chomsky:] Yes, like I wouldn't abandon Marxism. After all, we're not interested in making heroes and identifying ourselves with them, but of finding what's valid in various ideas and concepts and actions that have some use for us."

So, Chomsky says we can't abandon either anarchism or marxism as wholes just because of some extremist interpretations. How does that say he is a Marxist? It does not, of course, unless you are a paranoid anti-communist trying to discredit Chomsky by associating him with what you consider an Evil ideology.

Also, you must understand that being a scholarly discussion, Marxism is here strictly differentiated from Leninism, Stalinism, Trotskyism, etc. Marxism only refers to the initial political doctrine as expounded by Karl Marx.

As we can see, the cited text is taken out of context and made to imply much more that it actually says. Of course this is the typical modus operandi of the right, because let's be honest: their only arguments are those that appeal to our greed and selfishness. Better to demonize the opposition and thus appear angelic by default.

Glenn Beck Has A Brief Moment Of "Self-Awareness"

NetRunner says...

^ I flagged it lies for one of two reasons (take your pick):

1. Because Beck's ultimate point is that any liberal saying anything like this is actually an oppressive hatemonger (which is textbook truthiness/up-is-downism).

2. Because I (and the original YT poster) labeled this as a moment of self-awareness, and it's fairly obvious that it's not.

So, one or both of us is lying, fair warning.

My point was, that just like running on foot was an absolutely essential part of Usain Bolt's record, so was the use of actual Lego blocks to the video. I've already made this point 3-4 times, and have stopped defending it because you keep ignoring it

In reply to this comment by mentality:
Again, you fail to explain how Usain Bolt driving in a car and Usain Bolt running on foot would produce the same effect of allowing him to compete and succeed in a regulated sporting event. But hey, don't bother trying to defend it with reasoning. Just keep on telling me that you feel it is right. +1 for Truthiness.

Barney Frank Confronts Woman Comparing Obama To Hitler

iaui says...

Oh Winstonfield. I can't help but crack a smile every time you use the term 'neo-lib'. Your penchance to muddy discussions and repeat your truthinesses are so enjoyably predictable.

It's funny, but people bite at your bait and then when you switch they don't catch it. You just keep talking, always giving a slight nod to the previous person's view, but never actually facing their arguments. You want to think that anything you can argue someone else into believing is the truth. You want to think the ends justify the means. How can you be so obviously wrong and still consider yourself doing something good?

It's just gotten to the point where all I do is laugh at each of your posts. I used to want to engage you in discussion, but you don't have discussions. You just have you. And, while truly sad (and worthy of sorrow, to which I certainly nod my cap and hope I won't have to feel that for you any more) I can't help but see you doing it to yourself over and over again. At some point one must simply laugh, do you not agree?

And, actually on-topic, I did think Barney pwned this woman, and it's clear she deserves it, but I wonder whether it actually helps the D's case. Once again each side can see it like they want: The D's think the lady got smacked down and the R's rightfully claim that Barney failed to address her point. I know, I know. It's difficult to see that the R's can say that, but it was just like when Obama 'snapped' at that guy in the press conference, saying that he liked to wait a couple days until he fully understood a situation before commenting on it. The D's side claimed their guy showed his stuff and the R's claimed he weaseled out of answering the question.

I wish it were as simple as Winstonfield pretends it is.

That's not the argument we're having! ^ You said *using* a Mac makes you more productive. The fact that you have to devote time to support Windows in a web development environment doesn't make *using* Windows any less productive.

I'm not a Windows boy, I just call bullshit on either side saying their platform is better. You still haven't said anything that I see validating the claim that *using* (read: NOT "devloping for") Windows would slow you down significantly vs. Mac.

The "Windows for Dummies" comment reflects the fact that the majority of Windows niggles you listed seem to be based on Windows programs' default settings not being exactly to your liking.

Again, I am NOT a Windows/MS proponent. I'm here on the truthy middle ground where people use what works for them. As a web designer/games guy I have no problems using Windows or Mac... historically I have owned PC hardware and software and so the legacy sustains itself. I just get extremely annoyed when people ask me "Why don't you use a Mac?"-- and the implication is that I'm not professional or successful because I'm using boring ol' business PCs to perform the magic of web design. People who ask this type of question never know what the fuck they're talking about, and are clearly just regurgitating the message Apple's marketing department has successfully indoctrinated them with.

Just stop spreading the BS that Mac is inherently more productive, and we're cool.
