Your Brain on LSD and Acid

Mekanikal says...

Back in the mid 90's some friends and I dropped 3 tabs and went to Disneyland. The first 2 hours were great, Star Tours was a hoot but after that the paranoia sets in. We left after seeing the line for Indiana Jones. Anyone who says they have dosed in an amusement park and had a good time is a liar.

The Adpocalypse: What it Means

jimnms says...

I unblocked ads on YouTube for a while. It didn't last long. The annoying and insulting and unskippable ads finally forced me to block ads again. If there is a long, unskippable ad you used to be able to refresh until you got a shorter or skippable ad or no ad at all.

I didn't mind letting an ad play out for a creator I watched regularly if it was a "good" ad (see below). Long ads, especially if the it played at the end of the video, I would just mute the volume and switch to another tab until it was finished (although I have read that they have a way of knowing if the window/tab is in focus and don't pay if that happens). There was one that I used to get all the time. The "ad" part was 10 seconds long, then it was literally 7 more minutes of a guy eating a sandwich. Apparently advertisers tried to game the system because Google wouldn't count the ad as viewed unless a certain percentage was watched, but they put a stop to that eventually.

Has anyone else noticed a sudden spike in unskippable minute long ads on YouTube recently?

I seem to be getting the same ad on everything I watch these days.

@Mordhaus and @PlayhousePals what version of Chrome and OS are you running?
Have you tried submitting from incognito mode or Chrome's guest profile?
When you open Chrome's dev console, what errors/messages do you see there?

Ah. Late last night after 11 PM PST, VS was showing:

https://s28.postimg.org/9id7f2tjx/ssl.jpg for a screen shot/capture from SM's Page Info's Security tab.

I could reproduce this error in both of my computers (64-bit W7 HPE SP1 OS & 64-bit Linux/Debian Jessie/stable)'s SeaMonkey v2.46 web browsers. Also, Firefox v51 in my Debian box. I could not reproduce it in W7's IE11 & Debian's Chrome v50 web browsers that aren't based on Mozilla's Gecko engine.

I told Dag and Lucky760 about it, and it was fixed about 1.5 hours later. Kudos to the quick fixes!

At that moment, Firefox 51.0. But I've had some ciphers disabled since the early days of Logjam attacks, which included all ciphers using Diffie-Hellman without elliptic curves. That's why there was no overlap between accepted ciphers on my end and ciphers supplied by VS.

Nintendo for the Technology-addicted!

RedSky says...

Could be interesting.

I would normally say for something like this, it comes down to the graphical power of portable vs. console mode (and the footage in the video makes it seem like performance slowed to a crawl), but Nintendo have generally cranked out good first party games even on low spec hardware. 3rd party support might be a different question.

Also, the two controllers tabs separately split from the screen looks awkward as hell. Like seriously, the part where the guy was using it on the plane looked super awkward, almost like a parody video.

No Man's Sky Expectations Vs. Reality

dannym3141 says...

People love sandbox survival and they love space exploration and they fell in love with the idea of what this game could be. The magazines talked about it like evangelical christians talk about the rapture - this is the end of gaming as we know it and it's going to change everything! And the internet fandom descended with prepubescent fury on anyone that dared suggest the emperor was, in fact, nekkid.

This long video about NMS covers it extremely well, but i'll cut a long story short. There was something veeery slightly disingenuous about the moratoriums placed on reviews, lack of pre-release review versions, and significant backtracking and retconning of promises made by lead designer(? - but definite spokesperson) Sean Murray. The clean cut, well spoken, awkwardly charming Sean Murray. Who I think understood as the release date got closer that a lot of people were not going to be happy with him, because in his interviews he started to look more and more like De Niro playing Russian roulette in The Deer Hunter.

Extra things that immediately pissed me off before i refunded it:
- Menu stuff can appear offscreen if you open it by the edges in 2016
- Can't alt tab in full screen
- Run in borderless window to solve it, performance hit
- i7 6700k, Maximus viii Hero mobo and a GTX 1080 but yes, performance hit and general poor performance anyway
- Can't bind actions to thumb buttons in 2016
- Mouse sensitivity goes from 0 to 100. Changing my sensitivity from 100 to 0 didn't even half the turning speed in game, I had to alt tab to manually change the DPI in razer synapse, which is where i discovered i couldn't alt-tab.

All this for £40? Overwatch cost £30.

They made a lot of money off this, but I'm afraid for me they did it through unfair means. If you check out the quotes from Murray and what the game actually is, there's a huge disparity and the backtracking as release date approached was the final evidence.

Hodor makes fun of Apple in Samsung ad

cegli says...

The Galaxy Tab S2 (and the iPad) has a 2048x1536 (not 1080p) screen, but it's not the resolution they're bragging about. Samsung uses OLED screens, which offer far better picture quality than IPS LED. The contrast, color reproduction, and viewing angles are way better than any IPS LED screen.

Display Mate rated the S7 screen rated as the best they'd ever tested. ([url redacted] I really want to get an OLED TV someday, but they're so expensive... Someday...

Edit: It won't let me post urls, so you'll have to google the display mate review I guess...

Amazing Cello Duet with Four Hands, One Cello

I'm not saying this just to tear down an incredibly skilled trick, but because it's the truth - if I switch to another tab and just have the audio on, this is easily the worst rendition of this tune I've ever heard.

When You Show Your Girlfriend the Doctor Strange Trailer

I'm going to have to start looking at comments before watching every video now. Part 4 is in the mail right now from Netflix. I might as well send it back now.

Edit: I see it's in the description now. I had opened several videos in tabs yesterday and went to bed with them open. I still probably wouldn't have seen it because I don't scroll down to the description before starting the video.

One thing I liked about that in particular:
She looked like she was having fun, even when she wasn't so good.

I've played bass (electric, never tried an upright) for about 15 years. I only got *really* serious about it after getting Rocksmith 2014 -- went from playing once in a while to almost every day. I'm a LOT better than I was, can play a LOT of songs at least decently (say, 97%+ accuracy in Rocksmith), but still nowhere near as skilled as some.

BUT, it has been FUN every step of the way. Especially after trying Rocksmith, which presents "sheet music" in a visual, tab-like format that I can now effectively sight-read (it takes some getting used to, but works great once you figure it out). A lot of people are reluctant to try learning an instrument because they think it won't be fun, particularly in the early going. They think they will suck.

Well, in my experience that is half right. Yeah, you're going to suck (I certainly did). But it is loads of fun, in spite of that. And you get better fast -- the human brain is a pretty amazing thing. One day, you try a new song and think "damn, that is so hard I'll *never* be able to play it right". Then a month or two later you think "oh yeah, I should give that a second try" and all of a sudden it is very doable. Awesome to have those little moments of revelation when you realize that "hey, I am definitely getting better at this!"

VideoSift v6 (VS6) Beta Front Page (Sift Talk Post)

lucky760 says...

Sorry ant. It's a really delicate/difficult balance trying to make the highly desirable function of opening videos inline obvious while still providing a link in to the single post page. This is something new we're trying and hope it works okay (once you get used to it) because our other options are almost as confusing as a thumbnail that expands next to a title that opens a new page (where no one realizes you can click the thumbnail to expand the video).

Also note that you can middle-click post titles and thumbnails to open the video page in a new tab.

Thanks for your patience. We're just trying to make every aspect of every feature work the best it can.

Why hide permanent links on the home page? I kept clicking on the video to open into new tabs, but they expand on the home page. Bah!
