Decoding The Future With Genomics

jonny says...

Well, the talk was given in feb 2003 - the Human Genome Project had only just finished the "complete" map of human dna. Also, I think the main thrust of the talk was about reprogramming. It seems epigenetics would be only tangentially relevant as a modulator of code, not the code itself.

Has some good lines at 10min.

What about epigenetics? Its 2008, not 1998; its weird to talk about the importance of genetics and barely mention the next level of complication.

It's a good thing no one had a gun, otherwise someone might've gotten hurt.
And the psycho will not be executed because Canada "humanely" has no death penalty.
Good work, Canucks!

What a completely insanely stupid comment QM.
BECAUSE he had a knife and NOT a gun, only ONE person was killed, he wasn't able to shoot through the windows at people, he could be easily contained, couldn't shoot people as they exited the bus. etc. You've instead showed how much LESS dangerous knives are compared to guns. One is a close range, limited damage area weapon, the other can kill people at a distance.
And to try and suggest that the death penalty is the best thing here... bravo sir. That's the way to solve everything, kill the baddies. I'm sure you'd like them to have shot him on the spot wouldn't you? So then we could have no idea of understanding why this happened or how we can prevent such things happening again.
Oh, and from the story I read just before seeing this it's not currently known what caused the man to do this, one would expect there's some severe mental problem going on, I'm sure we'll find out more later.
This is terrifying because of the completely unprovoked nature of the attack (apparently the guy killed was asleep at the time), and it could be enough to stop you wanting to go on a bus ever again, but you have to remember that this happened ONCE, out of how many bus trips every day, every year?

Seriously? You called QM's comment stupid?
1) QM was saying that it's too bad that NO ONE ELSE had a gun, not the attacker. Jeesh.
2) Just because you learn why ONE guy killed someone, doesn't mean that you can prevent OTHER people from doing it. Humans aren't fucking computers. They can't just be reprogrammed when a flaw in the code is found.

Oh so only EVERYONE ELSE are allowed guns, just not the guys that spontaneously and without warning turn from a sensible, clear thinking passenger of a bus into a raving psychopath with killing tendencies? Oh ok, we'll just do that, then.

So guys, listen up - anyone that will at some point in the future turn from a normal, sane, clear headed individual into a raving psychopath drop your weapons now, and anyone that will never do all that just go to your local arming station and pick up a rifle, ok?

Yeah? That ok everyone? Good. Make sure you don't turn spontaenously and without warning into a raving psychopath, because then you'd be able to kill more and faster. Ok? You sure you won't? You're definitely telling the truth? Ok, good. Here's some more ammunition.

...
If we'd just killed someone as a kneejerk response to outbursts of life-threatening violence or sporadic and unprompted murder, it would have meant that we would have been far slower in our assessment of mental conditions and our ability to protect others from the effects of such.

That's some smart database management.

Oh wait, if an 'applauded comment' gets purged from the database, will siftie's star points for that comment end up disappearing?

Does this mean we've stumbled upon Lucky's elegant failsafe which will keep us safe from Siftbot domination of the world - at least for periods of no longer than 4 weeks, as long as it doesn't reprogram itself to close said loophole?

Oh no - that's way too many things that can go wrong!

We're on the other side of the looking glass, people!

Germany moves to ban Scientology (Religion Talk Post)

choggie says...

Scientology, like any other contrived system, apparently works for some of the folks that follow the program....similar to the self-transformation of say, the main character in Fight Club, it is self-reprogramming-it has worked well enough to create a buzz, and an empire, and like fans following a pop-star, folks give their time and money to it. Like most entities that claim their way or the highway, their ranks include assholes, and idgits.

Scientology is a symptom, of a planet being corraled to perform according to meaningless diversions, concocted by a self-seeking few. Any entity that proves itself to be as influential as Scientology, is seen as a threat.

In other words, when people get to the point collectively, where they are unsure about the future of the planet, and can't seem to pin-point the root causes of the problems, they begin to make shit up. this is why, instead of crippling the current keepers of the world economic and social structures, we engage in falling for the ruse the same creates, in the form of so-called free elections, so-called human rights issues, or so-called environmental catastrophies......as long as the perpetrators of lies stay hidden, the common people of the planet will get crazier, stupider, and less able to take care of the basic human condition.

Scientology is but a symptom, of an overall diseased geopolitical and economic system.

karaidl really IS a fat man! (Comedy Talk Post)

choggie says...

That is NOT karaidl! WTF is up with that???? Not everyone gets reprogrammed as well as jarheads-however, not many folks gets the luxury, of a drill instructor, though.....I am convinced, that the tlc-stfu, is the only real way, to drop unwanted excess, from the brain, and the body.

MarineGunrock, you rock-hard sunofabitch, that rock yer sittin' on, wankin' around on the puter, will soon turn to flubber, and you'll only have the memories of being able to fit into yer old fatigues.....(forget the dress uniform- ancient, fucking, when I was chiseled, history!

Monkey Island, MG. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. Text-based adventures, man. I grew up learning how to reprogram games off 5" floppies. It's weird to have one's hobby hijacked by pop culture.

Still, I think concerns, well-placed though they may be, about the public impression of gaming speak more seriously about the insane degree of political correctness being pushed down our throats than anything else. And fuck Jack Thompson.

How to hack an elevator to ride Nonstop

pho3n1x says...

i think it's amusing that still, to this day, most buildings taller than 12 stories don't have a 13th floor.

i dunno though. it sounds plausible. ( http://www.geek24.com/g/non-stop-express-elevator-ride-with-a-simple-elevator-hack )

The hack is rather simple, instead of pressing just the "floor" button, press the "door close" and the "floor" button together at the same time. It works on most Otis Elevators (All but the ones made In 1992), Dover (Model Numbers: EL546 And ELOD862) and most Desert Elevators(All, But Model Numbers ELD5433 And ELF3655).

engadget also has a piece on this too, though they also do a lot of quoting and repeating without checking it seems.

it would seem that, if nothing else but to conserve manufacturing prices, if this was a non-functional button they would 'write it out' of the plans. that depends on whether it's a template, or robotic manufacturing. easier to leave a nonfunctioning button in if it's a template, no need to create a new template. easier to take out a nonfunctioning or obsolete button with robotics... reprogram, save a button, and that precious 0.03¢

MSNBC Uncovers Skull and Bones Society

Farhad2000 says...

Constitutional_Patriot : This video has been posted before on this website before it vanished off Youtube, most people actually know about this already. Even then, the American people don't really seem to care about Skull & Bones because it's always been explained away as some kind of frat house in Yale by the media, and paid attention to as much as the collusion between big oil, Enron, KBR, Haliburton with the administration which is a far bigger issue in my view.

Rotty : You are nothing but a militaristic chicken hawk who trolls this website making incendiary comments that have no basis in reality or logic. You are the one that requires serious reprogramming.
