Disturbing Star Trek: The Motion Picture Transporter Malfunc

That scream - distrubing does not describe it well enough.

NYC's Best Burger, Explained

newtboy says...

I feel shame, just not for what I eat.
You can try to shame me, you'll just fail. You can annoy, however, with the constant vegan proselytizing, in the same way some religious zealots annoy but don't make atheists fear hell.
You succeeded with the insult, though, intentionally or not. I don't like the implication that we are all junkies, even cheese junkies.

You know full well I never said any such thing, and adding quotes as if you cut and pasted it is not honest. What I have said is your guru, an often discredited, exaggerating, data misrepresenting, cherry picking, hyper biased, internet "Dr" that makes his living selling pro-vegan lectures, books, and videos was not a good source for reliable science....you made up the rest. The internet was invented for science.

transmorpher said:

Well if you don't feel shame, then I can't shame you. Simple.

Edit: I forgot you were the guy who says "If it's on the internet, it's not science".

Bill Burr Doesn’t Have Sympathy For Hillary Clinton

bcglorf says...

@newtboy,

You said:Stop.

Glad we might be getting somewhere .

I agree on not forgiving the blatantly racist factions. I've said the same thing of ISIS, jihadists and their ilk. They and guys like Richard Spencer remain the mortal enemies of civilization. We never accept them or their ideas, if they want peace or cooperation, they are the ones that need to change.

I do still fear that for all practical purposes your position, and seemingly that of the democrats and protesters out in force, is little different from writing off everyone that voted Trump. If the expectation is that Trump voters need to be the ones that swallow all the change or make all the compromises then the difference doesn't matter. If you want to get people to vote your ticket or candidate, you've got to be the ones reaching out. Demanding the prospective voters come apologetically to your party isn't drawing them in, it's driving them away.

Neil Mcdonald from CBC I think summed up where a lot of Trump voters came to the conclusion that Hillary was no lesser evil:
You can bet they're listening closely every year at Halloween, when progressives reliably denounce as racist anyone allowing their children to dress up as a member of any other culture. Like, say, sending a little girl out dressed as Mulan.

Or when they're denounced as Islamophobes for even discussing the question of why so many people who commit mass murder of innocents do it in the name of Allah. Or as transphobes for using the pronouns "he" or "she" without explicit permission. Or as homophobes for obeying their priest or imam. Or as some sort of uninclusive-o-phobe for uttering the phrase "Merry Christmas."

There are millions of people out there who aren't terribly interested in a lecture about the difference between "cisnormative" and "heteronormative," and how both words supposedly describe something shameful.

the problem with google-the miseducation of dylan roof

RFlagg says...

There was a video posted to the Sift a few years ago or more, in which they discuss how Google search results aren't reliable, that it'll give two different people different results, as it likes to keep people in their confirmation bias, which she sort of talked a bit about here.

I'm fairly sure https://videosift.com/video/There-are-no-regular-results-on-Google-anymore was it, but that is either dead or my pc is having issues loading that video at the moment.

Anyhow, yeah, Google and others can, if you aren't careful lead to confirmation bias.

Ghost In The Shell-Trailer

JustSaying says...

People post misleading fake trailers all the time. I've fallen for that quite often until I started cross-checking with more reliable sources. It's especially annoying when you're interested in movies that aren't big Hollywood blockbusters. I've seen a few fake Phantasm 5 trailers years before they even started shooting it.
Not bad Newt, bad YouTubers.

An Intriguing New Gun Safety System

Stormsinger says...

Well, that's a pretty accurate description of this clip. Other technology is unproven and unreliable. Theirs is new, unique, and totally reliable. No self respecting science fiction author would stoop so low...you need Hollywood to get this level of "disbelief-required" (or L Ron Hubbard, which is even worse).

transmorpher said:

When I see this it just seems like a sci-fi movie promo akin to those fake Tedx talks promoting Prometheus, or a fake commercial from Robocop.

It's so alien and strange to me.

That's his evidence.

The man who can't tell a jar from a can and thinks the government is breeding fish-people. As reliable as any source you'll find in Bob's Rolodex.

Clearly he's either A) Not right in the head, or B) Trolling us.

Either way he deserves our pity, but not our time or one iota of conscious thought.

Ok, that's a serious allegation.

Hillary Clinton appears to faint stumble during 911 Memorial

dannym3141 says...

I have a few questions if anyone would care to satisfy my curiosity, I've seen/read a lot of stuff and I don't know what the reliable sources are for this. I'll list them so they're easy to answer, and I'm not trying to imply stuff or score any points, I just want to know. Sorry if any of this is tin-foil hat rubbish but I've been unable to sleep recently and ended up watching a lot of old crap, in a weakened mental state.

1 - Were those people with her yesterday, and does she often travel with, a nurse and a doctor?
2 - What's with the coughing and sicking up green globules into the glass of water? Never seen anything like that green stuff before.
3 - Did she need help getting up some stairs a while ago, or were they misleading photos?
4 - Why did no one react to her going completely limp? I can understand the well trained entourage explanation, but they didn't even look around to check for danger, considering their VIP went lifeless.
5 - Why did they take a collapsed elderly woman with pneumonia to an apartment rather than a hospital?
6 - Why say it was heat stroke?
7 - Has she really been pulling out of a lot of campaign events?

To be honest, I don't find her collapsing a worry at all. I've collapsed due to illness and I'm healthy and fit. What i do find strange is the reaction and lying about it. Somehow that makes me question the other things, but there you have it - my questions.

I think Clinton and Trump are equally bad. Clinton represents everything that disgusts me about politics - the 1%, 'the establishment', privilege and modern society, she will continue to sign off murdering innocent people and destroying the ecosystem for profit worldwide. Trump is.. well, offensive, sexist, racist, but i think only because it makes him popular, like a school bully, but he doesn't understand the new platform he has or what effect his words have on how people behave, and all in all that makes him a cowardly, selfish, egotistical weasel who we're about to give the keys to everything. Either way, we are fucked.

Youtube: Blocking Revenue is Censorship

Babymech says...

You can't pretend that all content is good content, though. Youtube needs to weed out the Isis recruitment videos and the kitten crushing, and they need to be able to reliably promise advertisers that their ads won't appear in front of that shit. YT has convinced creators that likes and views are actually what's important, but I bet YT can lose 100 large channels before they are willing to lose one large advertiser.

eric3579's link explains it, but there are options for advertisers who want to advertise on anything, regardless of content, and there are options for those who want to only stick to the approved material. Given the sheer volume of videos on YT, an automated system is necessary, and it's a good thing that they've now given users an option to appeal the non-monetization.

Youtube's advantage is not that they have content that isn't on tv, but that it's an established platform for viewing content on every device in existence. On the whole I think Youtube is still leveraging its significant power to provide a fairly open and unrestricted platform. If my company was being advertised there I'd probably want to have full freedom to choose the videos, and to demand, for example, that comments be turned off on every video with my ads.

00Scud00 said:

Except you still need content to attract viewers and YouTube did that by creating a place where you could find shit you will never see on traditional TV. Without viewers you might as well be erecting billboards around Neptune. And advertisers will be willing to pay for ad space on YouTube, there are simply too many eyeballs for them to ignore.

Debunking Hydration/Dehydration - Adam Ruins Everything

NateRA says...

Bad premise and bad conclusion.

Your urologist will not tell you to drink eight cups of water a day. Rather, your urologist will tell you to drink enough water to *pee* eight cups (about two liters) of water a day.

Depending on what you're doing, that could be a little or a lot. And when it's a lot, the thirst mechanism doesn't always work so reliably.

Inadequate hydration over a prolonged period of hot and muggy weather led to me getting kidney stones later on. Not fun. And unless medical evidence is wrong about preventing future kidney stones, the "drink when your thirsty" strategy will not have me hydrated enough.

Sure, for the limited situation he was describing, maybe the dehydration obsession is misplaced, but this was an oversimplified topic to the point of being meaningless or even dangerous to some. Adam certainly ruined something today.
