History Lesson from a Liberal Legend

For those who don't know this man (I didn't) he spent 50 years in and out of the British Parliament.

"Anthony Neil Wedgwood "Tony" Benn, PC (3 April 1925 – 14 March 2014), the former 2nd Viscount Stansgate, was a British Labour Party politician who was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1950 to 2001 (with two short breaks) and a cabinet minister under Harold Wilson and James Callaghan." /wiki

Obama's secret plan for nuclear war with Russia

@VoodooV far be it from me to side with choggie, but he's spot on about major political parties being "the same." Even with 3-4 parties to choose from in Britain, what we actually get is a change of figurehead. What we refer to as "democracy" in both our countries is not fit for purpose and does not represent the best interests of the people.

There's a wonderful indictment of British politics that i've seen floating around. It shows the political debate over changes to the welfare system and the chamber is empty save for 5-6 people. The debate about proposed increases to MP's pay shows a picture of an utterly packed house. That's a modern politician.

On monday, the FIDH and others will file charges in several European countries against members of different governments as well the heads of intelligence agencies for espionage and whatnot. I'm rather curious about the specific charges made against French and German intelligence agencies. I suppose it'll be complacency or a failure-to-protect sort of accusation.

By the way, it's basically the same group that also initiated the case at the ECtHR, so this ought to be interesting.

And while we're at it, legal advice given to British MPs outlined that GCHQ's actions appear to be in gross violation of the ECHR. No shit, sherlock.

CNN on Toronto City Mayor, Rob Ford

messenger says...

It's a thing now, and I am fully within its grip. I live in Toronto and I have vowed to vote for Rob Ford in every election I'm eligible to vote for him, just for the entertainment value he gives me, which far outweighs any harm he may cause me as my mayor/MPP/MP/Prime Minister.

Charmian Gooch: Meet global corruption's hidden players -TED

dannym3141 says...

I am so badly jaded by this point that i consider almost everything with power in the western world to be corrupt.

I used to say that those who were intelligent and caring enough to lead and forge a better world for all of us are least suited to get there, but i have since changed my opinion to a worse one; those who are most suited to getting into a position of power are those without empathy for others, who can and will abuse anyone and anything to further themselves - they are known as professional psychopaths, and i think we are led by them.

In our country right now, on average, the richest pay less tax than the poor, and the extremely rich can afford to pay no tax. Our MP's cheat expenses (which are already outrageous) and have second houses paid for them, they set up laws to help them dodge tax and make changes to our social systems so that they can sell them off to their friends. They recently even wanted a further pay hike because apparently all of those things followed by a guaranteed golden handshake/pension is not enough. Meanwhile, and this is not hyperbole, there are elderly people dying because they can't afford to heat their homes during the winter, and food banks have risen meteorically because others can't afford to feed their families.

This feels like some sort of medieval nightmare, where the kings and lords are living a life of plenty, stuffing their faces with roast pigs whilst the commoners starve and eat grass outside the castle walls.

I am genuinely concerned for the world, and i am bewildered by the fact that none of my friends seem to care as much as i do. All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing - apathy is how this world will burn.

To be fair, the same MP (Minister of Customs, no less) was worrying aloud last week about 3D printers and people printing off "sheets of ecstasy tablets".

Still, good on him for this speech.

Oh and Jerryk???-No need for all the draconian measures in an attempt to adjust society to your idyllic model: The military has rigorous psyche-screens for the guys whose job it is to turn the keys, enter the codes, and push the big red button and folks with better ideas (not unlike yours) are usually MP's or infantry!

Was this proven in court, or even commonly accepted as fact? My understanding is that they were jokingly talking about urinating on her. My suspicion is that a lot of what was said was really just typical bravado that wasn't actually acted out.

PS4 Announcement - Abridged Version

EvilDeathBee says...

I'm really surprised so many people actually give that big a shit about how the console actually looks. Seriously, how often do you sit and just stare at the console itself?

I've found myself migrating from my 360 to the PS3, it's just a better system for gaming. You can buy most new releases online (Games on Demand is pathetic), you don't have to pay for MP, you don't have to put up with MS's constant dashboard changes that are consistently awful, nor put up with superfluous BS like Avatars and the Welcome screen.

The only thing I don't like is the controller, and the PS4's controller looks great (except the stupid Share button), so I'm quite excited for the PS4, but also keen to see what MS will be offering and if they'll cock it up
