Hey there!

I hope that the truly bizarre welcome you got to the sift doesn't put you off, it's a great place for discussion.

I'm from way down south of Oz in Melbourne, but I've been to Byron Bay for a wedding, and it's a lovely place.

HI there, thought I'd introduce myself. It's my first week anniversary sifting here ... I see you are from Australia. I had a chance to visit during a whirlwind tour back in 2001 [My friends were headlining the Byron Bay Blues Festival that year, so I got to tag along] ... didn't get to spend NEARLY enough time in your country, but was impressed with how beautiful it is and how GREAT the people we met are. I hope I can go back some day, it was absolutely one of the most memorable trips I've ever embarked on, HoyHoy

Thanks! It was a bizarre introduction to the site, but hey, who doesn't like a bit of drama [when it's warranted that is]. I really enjoy it here [now] =oD

The band played the Mercury Lounge in Melbourne and the Metro in Sydney before popping over the Auckland for a show at the St. James Theater. It went by so fast! I really wish we'd had longer than ten days down under. My favorite little town was Nimbin in NSW ... my kind of people!

Where in the world are you? (Travel Talk Post)

Melbourne, Australia.
Grew up here, lived for a year and a half in England (Horsham and Aldershot) while I was 6/7
Came back here, was teased for my then British accent
Have been here ever since, with a brief period where everything was packed up and moved to California to work, but then work closed up shop, so came back to Australia without ever unpacking the shipping containers of stuff sent over... they just got put on another boat and sent back.

Fun times.

Coffee Snobs

"You know how there are those pretentious assholes that work at high end coffee shops and they make you feel stupid if you're not as obsessed with a stupid drink as they are?"
No I don't. Are these common place in the US? Does good coffee equal pretentious arsehole selling it to you?
My local cafe when, when I was living in Melbourne, the waitresses were so friendly and oh-so lovely, and their coffee was amazing (and so was the food) with their own blends.
Don't have to be snobby or pretentious to sell good coffee, but I guess since good coffee is easy to come by in Melbourne, there's no need to feel snobby about it.

I'm sure there are a few in the larger cities, I wouldn't say common. I've been in a few hipster pretentious coffee shops, where most of the pretentiousness was coming from the people I went with. The coffee was always odd tasting, the establishment dirty, and the seating overly casual, aka big disgusting couches.

After the discussion on petrol prices in the Lounge, this article may interest you:

Melbourne's petrol prices have generally been around $1.50/litre lately, which translates to around $6/gal in U.S. terms. In London (Swindon, SW11) it's 136.9 p/L ($8.08/gal).

The LCT mentioned in the comments in the luxury car tax, which applies to vehicles costing more than $50,000.

p.s. A bit of googling suggests that New Orleans area has petrol costs around $3.60/gal (or 90c/litre)... is that about right?

Can fake chicken feed the world?

EvilDeathBee says...

Once, meeting some friends in Melbourne city one night, they'd stopped off at a place called Lord of the Fries and gotten some "chick'n" nuggets. And they swore blind that it was real chicken no matter how much I tried to convince them that Lord of the Fries is 100% vegetarian. Mind you they were drunk.

I had one of their "burgers" before noticing the big sign saying there vegetarian. No sir, I don't like it. Good chips and fantastic sauces, though. Had an limited time "Obama Sauce" which was jalapeno, ketchup and pineapple. Was awesome!

Yeah, a pain in the butt, Youtube found that as I uploaded it, but said it wasn't an issue... and then promptly blocked the content for most of the world.

Here's another version with music supplied by Youtube. Somewhat different in feel

Thankyou Dag and Lucky, and all the members who spend ages doing housekeeping, for creating a site I visit every day.

I love the site, and it's the only one I've ever felt the urge to meet people in real life from.

Thanks guys for a place of interesting discussions and funny cat videos.

To the Future!

The link about the Melbourne sift-up made me curious. Sounds like a good time, but your video has been blocked - "This video contains content from WMG, who has blocked it from display on this website." Sounds like an overly aggressive copyright hunter.
