Girls Suck at Video Games

Sagemind says...

I must first say that my comments are not intended to Troll or invoke an "emotional" debate. (not that I was accused).

In no way do I deny stereotypes don't exist.
I also don't think statistics tell the whole story.

Things that can skew statistics:
1). Women almost always get the kids in a breakup - something men have had to fight for years and almost always loose. This leads to (plus) 1 woman doing domestic work and (minus) 1 men doing domestic work. (a factor of 2)
According to U.S. Census Bureau in November, 2009
* Approximately 84% of custodial parents are mothers, and
* 16% of custodial parents are fathers
So this means more women than men (by a large margin) can lay claim to domestic chores in the home over men. Not factoring in how many of those men fought for the right of custody that was never granted to them.

This same report states that 34.2% of custodial mothers have never been married while 20.9% of custodial fathers have never married. Why they were not married needs further study here but many young mothers never inform or notify the fathers or just never put the father's name on the birth certificate so the father has limited legal rights to the child.

2). There is often a job sharing practice in the home. One member (ofter the woman) stays inside and cleans the house while the other (often the man), does other chores such as yard work, car maintenance, household maintenance ect. These things makes it look like the women do all the chores while the men just "hang out" when actually they can balance out. Sometimes the roles can be reversed to the stereotypical roles - In my house, I do the dishes and the cooking while my wife takes out the garbage. A friend of stays away from his wife's power-tools and lets her do the yardwork while he takes care of the kids and their education needs.

3). Men are groomed to be (from a young age) that working is the only option. Period. Women have always been raised knowing there is an option of staying home or going to work (just find the right man). So that means a percentage grows up already deciding they will stay home. As such, they never pursue a proper education to to enable themselves to start "Climbing the ladder" from day one.

4). About 13 percent of women suffer from depression after childbirth often making work outside he home or at full capacity not possible. This depression can be caused due to "changes in brain chemistry" during pregnancy and "hormonal factors unique to women". "women are at greater risk of depression at certain times in their lives, such as puberty, during and after pregnancy, and during perimenopause." Levels of thyroid hormones may also drop after giving birth." As well, the common treatments for depression often cause an increases drop in ambition as the drugs used often remove both highs and lows.

I must make note here that this is not an opinion or a jab at woman - it's a fact and I have great respect for anyone trying to cope with depression, anxiety or related mood disorders.

I'm just trying to illustrate how nothing is as cut and dry as, "the women have to do all the work at home and work full time while never getting paid what they are worth - while the men never do anything, goof off all the time and get paid more... " I'm at work and can't write any more at the moment but I may be back

I don't think that's related. I get that sometimes too. Ad companies- and even our own, non-ad content - use Content Delivery Networks that replicate things like images, flash files and scripts across a network of servers around the globe- with the goal of directing you to the content that is geographically closest to your location. Sometimes those CDN servers have hiccups or down time.
We use a CDN for our images, CSS files and scripts at static1.videosift.com. Advertisers use something similar. Can you tell what content it's stuck on by looking at the status bar at the bottom of the browser?>> ^rougy:
I don't know if this is related or not, but about 8 out of 10 pages that I open on VS will not load all of the way. They'll just hang there and I have to press the stop button before the page will respond to any mouse clicks.
I've noticed that it tends to happen on pages containing some new Flash-type ads that I haven't seen before.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm using Opera now, so I can't see which element is hanging up, but I'll play around with FF and see if anything shows up.

F*** The American Mustache Institute

daxgaz says...

wow, i have so much to say on this subject, but i will try and be brief.

^NordlichReiter. A good, vintage style, double edge using razor and badger hair brush is where it's at. Everyone should get off the cartridge addiction.

this guy is right. if you got no chin, then guys can grow one and should be proud to do so.

However, if you can't grow a decent beard, then don't. no one will know if you shave. That's my suspicion for the debate between the two sides. There are many guys that can grow a mustache, but not a decent beard. instead of admitting their weakness, they make up silly rules about beards.

Not to get on a high horse about this, but at my company we have an annual beard and mustache contest and I am a the current and two time champion, so i feel i speak from a (odd and fake) position of some kind of beard authority.

finally, i do give credit to a big mustache. Beards just hang there, but a big mustache is like a pet. When you eat, it eats (and often, you accidentally eat it). It requires grooming and training like a pet. It can easily get smelly like a pet (and you can't avoid a pet that lives directly under your nose). Yeah, so if you like having a gerbil attached to your face, big mustache is the way to go. I speak from personal experience on this one.

Aww, fuck it, there's nothing admirable in any of this, stupid kids having stupid fights, badly videoed by people who are just hanging around to see a fight with no intention of doing anything to diffuse the situation. Yes he said he didn't want to fight, but he also didn't show great restraint like many of you said, he gave quite a few hits in after the fight was won.
No honour here, nothing to be applauded at all.

Have you been in any fights? I am not trying to start an argument, I am honestly asking. He showed great restraint through out especially after he knocked him down. Once your "fight or flight" response kicks in it is a whole other ballgame. It's one thing to observe this type of behavior and another to experience it.
That kid did better than 99% of us would.

Exactly. Being in a fight is a blur. The details of fights are better interpreted by onlookers. I've been on the ground being beaten and I've been on top of someone beating them, and I can honestly say it feels like an instant; then, suddenly, you're being pulled off someone or someone is being pulled off of you. It is as if you were intoxicated.

The restraint lies in the fact that he did not go into a frenzy. I know I would have because I've been there -- no one knows how they'll act until it happens. Physical fights can be like moments of insanity.

Brokaw: "This is completely out of control"

Nithern says...

I've noticed four sub groups, to the three camps in the poltical arena. We have the traditional three: Conservatives, Moderates, and Liberals. But the conservatives & liberals have two other groups: the comprimisers and the fanatics.

Comprimisers, tend to think on legistation, and talk with their counter-parts on the isle. Finding ways to agree to one thing, but come half way on another issue. In do this, they can they have the other side, come to their side on an issue. Its a give & take relationship. When that happens, alot of good works come out of congress, and help propell this country forward.

Fanatics, are the opposite. They take the route of 'my way or the highway' attitude towards discussions. They would not move an inch on their position, regardless if God, Himself, said so. These are also the ones who just flat-out reject the other side, regardless of the issue or arguement. Even if the issue stands to help their side of the arguement.

Today's politics, has these four groups, a compriser & fanatic to each side. The liberal side seems (for the moment), to have a heavy percentage of comprisers then fanatics. Were as conservatives, have a heavy amount of fanatics to comprisers. This creates a huge amount of tension on even simple issues (like education, and the President talking to American children), let alone a complication issue (like Health Care in the USA). We actually call these fanatics the 'neo-' group. Neo-lib, or neolib, and the neo-cons.

Moderates, however, tend to not be as full of passion on the subject matter. They are there, and discuss of things. They tend to have mixed views, liking the ideas of one side, and the other. Some try to bridge the gap of the arguement, to bring a consenus and move on to the next task at hand. And some, rather enjoy the chaos that is created, and just hangs on. Since, the issue will come up in the next election, and judging on how people in their home area feel, is how they market themselves. Which is why many of the issues we all say come up on the Democratic and Republican sides, are the same ones from 1930! Yes, some issues, are new-er, due to history conditions (i.e. events of Sept. 9, 2001, and following it), and some due to technology (i.e. stem cell research and the Internet). But most issues, are just blown over from issues that go back decades.

Just hang around for the bad...the storm will clear and you will see the sun again. Every spring and summer has a winter. And the autumn? Well the autumn is meaningless preparation for the winter. Fuck the autumn, it's as useless as the "n" at the end of its name. It's a fence-sitter season. We should just extend summer and winter so that we don't need an autumn.
wait...what was this about again? Oh yea, stop pussin' out 'cause you had to experience the ugly side of keeping this site fun. It's painstaking and not for everybody but if you don't like that part of it, there's always the videos...
