Bill Maher ~ New Rules (October 29th 2011)

shagen454 says...

Always glad to hear positive comments about psychedelics in the media. I definitely know that mushrooms made a positive impact on my life. But, I definitely wouldnt push acid around lightly. Its certainly magical but I have my reservations about that drug. Although, nothing has been proven I think acid does have minute but negative long term side effects and plus its more visual which is awesome but doesnt have the same sort of introspection psilocybin has... in my opinion. Of course it is different for everyone and with acid, the dose is a major factor. Everytime I took acid I had to 'recover' the next day.

Oh and psychedelics probably shouldnt be used by kids, but I dunno since I only smoked pot when I was a kid.

please show me where in this thread someone else discussed how "fuckable" she is (or isn't), excluding of course dft's hypothetical question meant to invalidate qm's own opinion.
i "single" you out because you are the only one who made such a comment.
if you feel "singled" out by "whatever" is "stuck up" my "ass", you should read my comment history and you will realize that i make the same bitchface comments to all the thoughtless, unwise, latently sexist, white, middle class, male, proto facist comments i've ever had the displeasure of reading on this site.
if this is causing some butt hurt on your end, my prescription would be a quiet period of introspection and to reread your comments and wonder how on earth someone could up come with the aforementioned category to fit them into it.
if you can't find the answer, it's hopeless. unclench and the pain will subside.

What horseshit.

The question he was responding to was "Is it just that you want to fuck her?"

Take two more pills.

Wow, humanism indoctrination video. I hope everyone can see through the brainwashing. And people say humanism isn't a religion..
I think this video is actually risky because it is such painfully obvious propaganda. It might actually serve to wake people up to the humanist agenda.
All I have to say is just wait until the one world government comes, then the true meaning of "we got scared" will come to light.

You're ignorant, greedy and careless. You'll consume and devour your way through 80 years worth of resources, using more than you should, caring less than you should, making this planet a slightly worse place to live. And there's enough of you that, together, you'll make this planet an unbearable place to live in your desperation to get as many little pieces of paper with "£20" written on it as you can before you die.
How is it humanist propoganda? How is it brainwashing? Provide at least a cursory attempt to qualify your statements. People do not get indoctrinated to believe that life is beautiful and needs no purpose. They realise it for yourself. I consider it an evolutionary step achieved through enough introspection and education. Hopefully, one day, consumers like you will catch up with us and we'll have enough time left on earth to have some fun with it.

Keith Olbermann asks Alan Grayson about "Let Him Die"

packo says...

well, while I think the Tea party is moronic
and the republican debate was a joke
the people chanting "let him die" honestly numbers fewer than the number of fingers you have on one hand

i hardly think this is indicative of every republican, and it shouldn't be a call to "arms" for the democrats, the real issue here is how little the republican party (without prompting) condemned such statements

y'know, like how they expected and then were disappointed with how the majority of peaceful, loving Muslims didn't come out with condemnation for Islamic fundamentalist terrorists

OH WAIT, the hypocrisy gets worse...
just remembered people booing Ron Paul when he said something to the effect that Islamic terrorism isn't all Muslims

whether it is simply base and immoral politics, or actual character flaws with republicans or the republican party... THIS is the real issue, and won't be solved by democrats pointing the finger; but by some introspection

I'm not holding out hope on that front

Touré Calls Out Media 9/11 Nostalgia

If nothing else, it's a day of national reflection in a country if not outright hostile to introspection in general (gets in the way of consumerism) then definitely not inclined to it.
We need more soul searching as a nation, not less.

It should be that, and for anyone who treats the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect and search their soul, they have my respect. I don't believe that is what he was railing against.

But rather the way much of the news media makes it into an all-day annual event, produced like a schmaltzy patriotic movie. It's very often the opposite of thoughtful reflection, but feels more like non-stop shameless pandering. The most irritating sort of politics applied to a historic tragedy.

I guess it all depends on what broadcasts you've seen or listened to on the anniversary.

Killing People Gets Applause: Welcome to Texas

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

I don't approve 'cheering' capital punishment. Any life that is prematurely ended represents a loss of human potential, and in the case of death row inmates it also possibly represents a lost soul to boot. It is not a time for cheering. It is a time for sober introspection.

That being said - I don't accept the sentiment here. The cheering was misplaced enthusiasm - no more. The liberal left is guilty of FAR more 'disturbing' behavior than a cheer in support of the concept of capital punishment. Every day the neolibs falsely label and impugn the Tea Party, GOP, & anyone else they dislike as racists... The practice threats, violence, and intimidation at average folks who do nothing more but dare to disagree with thier agendas. They also regularly seek to ban, shut down, or censor any dissent from thier self-appointed mantras. This is far more disturbing than a cheer for capital punishment because it is a regular, pervasive, constant practice.

Perry's response was just fine. There is nothing wrong with capital punishment as a penalty for those who have abrogated their right to participate in human society through their own actions. I reject the progressive argument of moral equivalency that seeks to state that there is no crime which a person can commit that warrents capital punishment. I also reject the argument that because the justice system is not 100% perfect, it dictates that capital punishment should not exist within it.

Bill Nye Explaining Science on Fox is "Confusing Viewers"

packo says...

capitalism is doing a dandy job undermining itself atm... it needs no help, other than what the banks/politicians (primarily Republicans, but also Democrats) are already contributing

it is quite simple to look back at history (which extends beyond 6000 yrs), and by looking at historical trends to extrapolate what future trends should be, to quite accurate degree

no one is saying taxes and regulation DIRECTLY affect the temperature... and if you believe that the left actually think that, you need to do a little introspection... however, again looking at history you can see that taxes/regulation are able to focus/define/direct economy and industry... its exactly what brought the US out of depression for example... so if your goal is to reduce environmental impact of industries that are leading sources of pollution, or to spur innovation/creativity in new, less harmful technology... taxes/regulation is how you do it

if you leave it up to the private sector alone, what motivation do they have to not do business as usual? the current US/World economy is less driven by innovation as it is driven by profit... someone comes up with a good idea? buy them out or leverage them out of the market if it competes with your product (or better yet buy their product, but sit on it... why bother going through the expense of changing systems)... the US has been brainwashed into thinking Capitalism is wringing every last drop of blood out of a stone, rather than creating new markets/fields

there has been alternative energy source vehicle technology for DECADES, yet they are just trickling into the market now... and its not because people haven't asked for it, its because profit is shortsighted and definitely not philanthropic... its because people stopped buying American gas guzzling penis extensions and started looking at the more economical foreign offering... industry couldn't predict that a shrinking middle class and rising gas prices would change the market... but change was there, so they might as well throw in that environmental issue people have been worried about for the past 50yrs

and when someone starts touting capitalism and poo pooing marxism, socialism, and the like... that's when I know I've been introduced to an idiot... you do realize your quality of life, your standard of living, services you consider essential, etc come from those ideals AS WELL AS Capitalism...

right?

and one or the other, on their own, taken to the Nth degree, are just as horrific as the other

an idiot who hasn't thought for themselves is QUITE ready to start cheering for one side or the other

Good without Gods

I'm glad to see the topic of secular morality blooming. I've always known through introspection and observation that religion is not required to live a moral life, but I'd never thought of how to explain this to someone who believed their morality only came from God.

I guess I have started to sound quite the jerk when it comes to sb's obsession.

No, I wouldn't like a place that capriciously banned people for unpopular thought.
And, I know that voicing my objections will not change sb's compulsion to proselytize.
So, I guess a little introspection is needed on my part.
Thanks bb2, and a good day to all.

So, what happens when the world doesn't end?

grinter says...

..thing is, we all have parts of our lives that suffer from a lack of introspection. We may feel just fine about our actions and beliefs without seeing how they contradict with our set of values. This contradiction can be so great that it is very difficult to accept as an innocent error of the kind we should expect ourselves to make; it shakes out egos.

It's not the strongest argument, but, for the sake of continuity, consider what the reaction of Sift omnivores would be if they were forced to slaughter their own meat. Even those claiming they feel no moral imperative to respect the suffering of other animals might wince just a bit as that calf calls for it's mother in its last moments of consciousness.

God does exist. Testimony from an ex-atheist:

MaxWilder says...

Just want to pipe in here and say that a huge part of this massive debate is caused by the fact that nobody will agree on the definition of words.

Atheism - Often used to mean "I believe that there is no such thing as God, any conceivable God you might come up with." More accurately, it simply means that one does not accept the claims of theists.

Agnosticism - Often used to mean "I have no opinion one way or the other." Actually it means the belief that "revealed knowledge" such as that delivered through scripture or prophets is utterly without merit; knowledge that cannot be demonstrated or reproduced is not true knowledge.

The only scientific viewpoint here is Agnosticism, which by definition is Atheistic because Theists have no verifiable means of supporting their claims.

This argument completely falls apart because on one side you have people that need evidence to believe something, and on the other side you have people who believe that their faith is valid despite the lack of evidence. In some cases it is even strengthened by the lack of evidence.

The only argument that should be happening is right there. What do you consider evidence? Theists believe that knowledge has been given to them through scripture, testimony like the video at the top of the page, and personal introspection.

I say that is nonsense, and no way to organize you personal worldview. But how could I possibly convince someone who does not value logic and tangible evidence? It simply can't be done.

I was raised Christian. I spent a lot of time wrestling with my beliefs, and at times I felt very close to God. But I grew up, and I learned the difference between reality and fantasy. Some people will simply never make that distinction. For them, a vivid delusional hallucination becomes their reality. To me, that is a sign that they lack an understanding of how the brain functions under severe stress.

So, shinyblurry, the one and only point I would like you to remember is this: Stop quoting the Bible at atheists. It makes you look like an idiot. We don't believe it is the word of God. We don't believe it is holy. We know it was written by human beings with their own agendas, or delusions, or whatever.

Also that video you posted about Hitchens is pure ad hominem attack, and it is vile. You are only serving to further increase the divide between Theists and Atheists. You will not be converting anybody here today.

No, it actually was quite terrible.

you just make my point with your comments.
i did not use the phrase "self-righteous" as a slight but rather as a statement.
one in which you have confirmed over and over and over.
your presumption and hubris are appalling.
you are a troll of the worst kind because you are already convinced of your righteousness and everybody you interact with are clueless to the truth you hold.
maybe they would listen more if you were not so condescending.
personal revelation?
great but how does that dismiss my evangelical statement?
gnostic gospels?
sure..but how does that take away from my premise that the more information we have the clearer the picture becomes?
jesus may possibly have studied with buddhist monks.
how does that take away from his teachings?
or his sacrifice?
it takes away NOTHING.
and instead of discussing something that is obviously important to you..
what do you decide to do instead?
make veiled insults towards me and ignore my argument entirely.
you are a child who is convinced of his own certitude and throws hissy fits when called on his own bullshit.
i do not know you.
i do not know if you have studied for years or got your information on the back of a cracker jack box.
i only know what you reveal here by your comments and you come across as a condescending know-it-all who takes any disagreement personally and attacks whomever has the audacity to direct any disagreement your way.
will you take this comment as it is intended and maybe perform some introspective thinking?
or will you behave.... as i have witnessed...like a spoiled child?
time will tell i guess but i feel i should be clear here...
i dont really care what you do.

Now, you send me a comment filled with personal attacks and call me immature. I'm guessing you're probably..15? Give me a break. Go do your homework and clean your room while you're at it.
