Zero Punctuation: Deus Ex

Sarzy says...

>> ^budzos:

I'm playing the sequel right now. Have to say I'm enjoying the action a bit more than the story. Is it just me or does everyone talk a little too much? Every character in the game has logorrhea.
Like, I don't need to have a conversation with my helicopter pilot every single time she picks me up and drops me off.
At least I'm actually paying attention to the story and the boring dialogue. Have to admit much as I love sci-fi, and even though it was brand new when I was playing it, I could not get into the story of the first Deus Ex at all... and once you play an hour of that game without paying attention to the story... good luck.

Really? Maybe it's because I've been playing Mass Effect fairly recently, but I thought the Human Revolution characters have been fairly straight-to-the-point.

Have you ever tried to go through every conversation tree with characters in Mass Effect? Those dudes can talk FOREVER.

@mentality disagree. Although I wouldn't call DX THE best PC game of all time but it's definitely one of the best.

Still haven't completed DX: Human Revolution yet (almost there i think) but it's fantastic. They've done a fantastic job at recreating the atmopshere and style of the original game yet modernising it in all the good ways. It's not without it's faults but I commend Eidos Montreal and I now look forward to seeing what Thief 4 becomes after being burned by Deadly Shadows

Now don't get me wrong, when it comes to most video games, I am usually a bit on the anally-completionist side, but given the option to just run past a boss (actually, every boss) in Human Revolution, I would have done it in an instant.

If only that had been carried that over

Never played Deus Ex. I will now.

The biggest PITA with Deus 1 is the very first level. Your painfully clumsy and it's a bit frustrating, but once you're past that the story grabs you and you're off.

Just finished playing the leaked beta... it is looking like a really good game. The only real complaints I have are related to rough beta issues rather than design decisions.
I can't wait to play the full game now.

Wow, lots of complaints in these comments. THIS looks like a proper Deus Ex game (not like that woeful Invisible War) and i cannot wait to play it.

I've been so tempted to try the leak, but definitely want to wait for the final release. Seeing these actual gameplay vids though, really making me excited for it

Instead of having to deal with 50 more button combinations for jumping between covers, how about this: you peek around a corner IN FIRST PERSON, wait for the guy to turn his back and then sneak to the next cover.

From what I can tell, there's only two buttons used for cover. There's a "cover button" (which you can set to either be a toggle or a "hold" behavior) and the jump button. Press jump to dive to another cover, hold jump to round a corner while maintaining cover.

I could do without the 3rd person aspect, but the implementation isn't bad.
>> ^kranzfakfa:
And maybe when you climb ladders, you can climb them at your own pace, maybe even stop in the middle of them IN FIRST PERSON instead of waiting for some shitty animation to end all the while some guy maybe shoots you in the back when you're helpless.

The player does control the movement up and down ladders and can stop at any point... maybe they'll have a way to disable the 3rd-person view. You can also look around while on the ladder (not full 180 though) and "jump" off the ladder at any point, but so far I haven't found any way to fire a weapon while climbing.

Looks nice enough, This reeks of console, and the modern notion "players need their hands held". The obsessive cluing the player on whats going on. From glowing guns, boxes, doors; to the button diagrams that never disappear. I also get steamed up about those action cut scenes that choke an enemy for you. ughh.

I'm not sure about the animations for the special moves, but the highlights and other "clues" can be turned off in settings (thankfully).

I've been messing around with the leaked beta for an hour or so. It definitely needs some optimizations (drags my comp pretty hard) and some work on the key bindings (doesn't detect some of my extra mouse buttons) but I generally like it. The music and atmosphere are great and the conversations system seems to work well.

I haven't had much chance to test out the combat system yet so I can't comment too much on it. So far weapon accuracy has been terrible, which is actually a compliment! I was afraid there would be too much Rambo action, but it rewards stealth pretty heavily. I won't pass judgement on the cover system until I test it out some more.

The leaked press demo of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, however, handily answers the question of what the best game of the year is/will be.

There's a shitload of potentially awesome games in the works: Skyrim, BF3, GW2, Diablo 3, the new X game... bound to be more. The games industry owes us for the last 18 months or so.

He's dead-on about the criticisms. L.A. Noire is one of the year's most anticipated games for me -- I bought a 360 primarily so I could play it -- but it's been almost 2 weeks since I've played. That sucks.

The leaked press demo of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, however, handily answers the question of what the best game of the year is/will be. Fucking awesome.

Top Upcoming 2011 PC/Console Games!

>> ^EMPIRE:

Yeah right... Top 5 most anticipated games of 2011 if you only care about RPG's.
There's such a lack of obvious games it's mind boggling. Where's Portal 2 (i know it already came out, but it came out in 2011), where's LA NOIRE, where's Skyrim, where's Rage, where's Mass Effect 3, where's Duke Nukem Forever (i know... but it still counts), etc...

1. Upcoming games, so no Portal 2.
2. Mass Effect 3 is slated for 2012.
3. Rage and Duke Nukem Forever don't look all that fun to me, but I hope they prove me wrong. Also, Duke Nukem Forever could potentially slip into 2021.
4. Skyrim and L.A. Noire... I totally agree with you on.
5. I have very low expectations for Star Wars: The Old Republic. I wanted it to kick ass, but everything I've seen tells me it ain't gonna happen.
6. Dragonball Z Online??? How the fuck did that get on here?
7. Torchlight was fine, but how anyone could consider a sequel among the top 5 on this list is beyond me.
8. Any finally... NO FUCKING DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION?!? Madness!

[EDIT] Ohhhh this isn't put out by Game Trailers, it's some doofus' personal list. Fuck that. Here's mine.

1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
2. L.A. Noire
3. Guild Wars 2
4. Skyrim (reluctantly... looks awesome but the Elder Scrolls series has been a gigantic disappointment for me up to this point, aside from being beautiful environment simulators)
5. This one is tough... but I'm going to give it to Heroes of Might & Magic VI

I am so psyched for this. 2010 was a great year for gaming. 2011 seems to be another one in a row:

Portal 2
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Mass Effect 3
Uncharted 3
Duke Nukem Forever
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Crysis 2
Brink
The Witcher 2
Diablo 3
Rage
L.A. Noire
Gears of War 3
The Last Guardian
Journey
