CBC thoroughly deconstructs homeopathy

messenger says...

Wrong. That there is no original ingredient doesn't prove anything other than the contents of the bottle, which isn't part of the homoeopathic claim. Remember, homoeopathy doesn't say that the source ingredient does any curing. The stated theory is that the water somehow "remembers" something about the original ingredient, and that the memory of this ingredient in the water cures things. To prove that claim false, you need to do experiments that give reproducible results. Proving the original ingredient is gone disproves nothing about homoeopathy.

So, to answer your question, this reporter could have shown an interest in that kind of research, could have asked why it hadn't been done yet, as measuring the medicinal effects requires no sophisticated instruments. She could have pressed the point with Mr. Ontario Government why these things are being treated like medicine when they're just water and not scientifically tested for anything. This was just a hit job. She knows the product is fake, and that many people are going to get sick and die because of reliance on this crap, so she's angry. But still. This is journalism.>> ^Matthu:

>> ^messenger:
For such an opinionated journalist, she didn't make any scientific effort to prove that they don't work. That there's no active ingredient left is very, very compelling evidence against it, and I strongly doubt that homeopathic medicines have any effect at all, but none of this report proves that they don't work.

How could she as a journalist make any effort other than visiting scientists and talking with them? Should she have obtained a degree in chemistry? What else could she have done?
There being no active ingredient in the medicine doesn't need to prove they don't work, it proves flat out that they CAN'T work. Water doesn't cure cancer.

Tea Party Reasoning

CreamKreator says...

Or you can take the one thing out of that equation that causes pain and suffering more than any idea in the history of man: Money.

That's nonsense. Money is a commonly accepted medium of exchange to defeat the inefficiency of barter. It is, in essence, a product that is a placeholder for other products. That was truer when we were on gold than now, but still... Are you saying you don't want people to make stuff and trade with each other? Stop watching TV and read "Economics in One Lesson." It's only $10 on amazon.

Yes i do mean we could all live with out money. Lets value the true worth of ones work to community.. Do you really think that money is the ultimate asnwer? It is someting we humans thought of to make things a little simpler as bartering had it's disadvantages. And by bartering one can't collect such a huge amounts of wealth in one lifetime, all that lead us to the point where a small percentage of people in the world own most of the wealth. Is that right? Some poor schmuck in Thailand is working his ass of to produce for us the cheap tuna that we eat. A good socialist would think that it is just plain wrong. I don't mean that hard work and commitment shouldn't be appreciated, yes of course, that is EXACTLY what i mean. Why should a construction worker make more money in Switzerland than in India? Just let all people have what they deserve, not what we in the western society think they deserve.

And that private schooling? Yes, i bet that the overall quality would raise but what about those who then simply can't afford to pay for it? Will you let them stay in the low income slums and make products for us. Class strugles should be a thing in the past by now, we are smarter than that. Hell, let's put the low class monkeys to prison so we won't have to pay them anything. We can keep them there for years for stealing a cigarrette or smoking a joint. Really?

US of A, i despise you more and more every day and i use to look at you in awe and wonder. The land of the free.. Right.. Just look at the health reform... Let the poor get sick and die, let's just hope that they manage to multiply before the massgrave so we can have more SLAVES!

And the next comment after this probably says i'm a terrorist.. Far from it, pacifist whose grand dad went to jail for not picking up a gun, as did my dad. We should all be free of organized religion, free of the monetary powers, free to be humans. No we are alla just slaves.

Sorry about the rant again but this thing just ticks me off. And i'm afraid that something so bad will happen if these things are allowed to continue. And by the way, i don't even own a TV...

Rush Limbaugh - Healthcare Is A Luxury

blackest_eyes says...

>> ^quantumushroom:
The conservative philosophy DOES create a nation where everyone gets the best opportunity to live a fulfilling life, but it doesn't GUARANTEE a fulfilling life, and never will. Life doesn't work that way.

So someone who couldn't get insurance because they have a pre-existing condition gets sick and dies. You're telling me they really had the "best opportunity to live a fulfilling life"? What world do you live on?

The constitution hasn't meant anything since Bush overruled it and turned the presidency into a monarchy, which has the power to do whatever it wants in the name of "national defense." Guess conservatives kinda dropped the ball there eh?

And maybe we could afford to insure everyone a lot more easily were it not for Bush's massive deficit-inducing tax cuts?

Dennis Kucinich Raises a Valid Point on Health Care

PHJF says...

...Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

So that doesn't imply, I don't know... not getting sick and dying?

You can argue your conservative position day and night but in the end what you want to do is let people die. There's a word for that, and apparently it's not in your vocabulary (must have kicked it out to make room for clever slanders against taxocrats, right?)

unconscionable

I'll leave it to you to look it up seeing as how you're so capable and responsible.

Urgent Warning about Gardasil

Sagemind says...

OK, so I have a12 year old daughter.
Speaking from first hand experience, my daughter received this shot in grade six (last school year). There were no adverse effects. But as a parent, it is still a scary situation that we put our lives and the lives of our children at risk to medications we don’t know anything about.

Sure, some medications can be a good thing. But it seems odd to me that a vaccination can cause so many problems and cause such an uproar. There is quite a lot of negative media out there for this drug, as well as the fact that they want to make this drug mandatory for all kids, and they are considering prescribing it for all boys as well. - That right there puts up red flags for me.

Big Pharma companies are always looking for the new “New Drug” to sell us. They don’t stay in business unless they keep us buying their products. And with the monies involved in these drugs, I don’t put it past them to fake results, skew data, lie or deflect negative publicity. I also don’t put it past them to create the illnesses that ail us, just so they can sell us the fix. (not that I'm saying that's what they've done here).

Kerry Mullis (http://www.karymullis.com/)said it best in his book, that we always take what we are given, always thinking someone is out there looking out for us, but there isn’t! Big companies only look out for themselves. The only one that can look out for you, is you! – So be aware…

If we don’t stop and question what is being shoved down our throats, then who is going to? I’m not flat out accusing anyone of anything specific, but don’t just think that if a government agency has passed it, that it is safe.

Kids should not be getting sick and dying because of this drug – but they are.
Not all of them, it’s a small percentage, but in my mind and the minds of many others and in the minds of those who have been effected, it is still too many. You can’t think, “Oh, that’s OK, we can kill off a few kids and make a bunch more suffer – it’s for the greater good”. Because that’s NOT OK in my books.

Scorpion vs. Black Widow ~ Intense, sheesh!!!

xxovercastxx says...

Wow, the signal to noise ratio on this debate is terrible. There's a couple statements here I was interested in replying to; some serious and some not so.

therealblankman...this is worse, barely passes the "no snuff videos" rule...hmmmmm...
http://www.videosift.com/video/Tiger-hunting-in-India-Sometimes-the-Tiger-Wins

You can't be serious. Not only does that video not show loss of human life, but there wasn't even any loss of life off-camera. That encounter wasn't planned for amusement, it was an event that unfolded naturally and just happened to be caught on film. The participants also had an important option that our arachnids here did not: run the fuck away.

Next fight should be Scorpion vs Brown Recluse

Brown recluse spiders are not aggressive and generally attempt to escape or hide from threats. That's why they call them recluse. No doubt you've seen photos of a necrotic brown recluse bite and somehow got the idea that they are vicious fighters. Bites rarely turn necrotic and when they do, it takes several days. Your proposed fight would be roughly equivalent to a Staffordshire bull terrier vs a mallard duck with avian flu. The dog might get sick and die later, but it's going to rip that duck to pieces.

Sorry for causing controversy

Controversy is nothing to be sorry about. All the best moments here start with some controversy. It's the quality, or lack thereof, of many of the posts that people should be sorry about.

It's called NATURE. If you can't handle it, then stay the fuck out of this channel. What next, are you going to bitch and cry about a video showing a lion taking down a zebra in Africa? "Oh, that's cruel!"

It's been called nature, yes, but I fail to see the natural aspect of a cage deathmatch. As I implied above, most animals will try to escape when faced with death. That's what you might call a natural reaction. The spider attempts to put distance between it and the scorpion a couple times, but it can't because it's trapped.

If anyone could understand humanity, it's a "military man." I guarantee I've seen and experienced WAY more shit than you ever will. I've seen shit that would make normal people gag, seen stuff that would give people nightmares for months, and experienced things that would warm the coldest of hearts all in one week.

MG, let me preface my actual statement. I do this because what I'm about to say may well offend you and that's not my intention, though it's probably unavoidable. I think I speak for the majority here, that I respect your sacrifices and service to our country. I also respect your opinions and acknowledge that if it weren't for people like you, we may not have the right to have opinions.

However, none of this places you above us. I realize that you've been brainwashed to believe that you are the ultimate form of human, but the only people who believe that are the other people who were brainwashed with you. In the past 10 years or so, I've known several people who've been in the corp. They've all come out with the same superiority mentality. We all know you've had unique experiences and have unique insights, but so has everyone. Stop trying to be everyone's drill sergeant and just have a discussion. You're not impressing anyone.

The sift will sift what it feels is appropriate or not. Since this video doesn't break any of those rules. It shall be...

I'm downvoting this, myself. I don't believe it breaks any of our rules, and it doesn't even particularly offend me, I just find it has no value. If I wanted to watch lower life forms crawl all over each other, I'd go download the Paris Hilton sex tape. This isn't an insightful look at nature, except maybe the nature of immature boys. It's not entertaining, funny, creative, educational or anything else I believe the sift seeks to represent.

This commercial will blow you away...

jimnms says...

WTF, I didn't say anything about planes or coal. You still don't get it do you? When a plane crashes, it doesn't leave the land uninhabitable, and those killed/injured are only the ones on the plane and the ground where it crashed. People don't get sick and die later from plane crash sickness.

The risks are not worth it to build new nuclear power plants when safer, cleaner alternatives are available.
