President Truman's Ultimatum to Japan (before Hiroshima)

m00t says...

The decision to drop the bomb was also partly influenced by the desire to demonstrate to the Soviets that the US had developed a weapon of mass destruction. What they didn't know is that Stalin not only knew about it already but was developing their own version. This late in the war the relations with the Soviets was already shaky and both sides were posturing for a better position after the conflict.

I am going to ignore you as much as possible in the future. I've said all I want to say to you and I hope that you will reflect on my posts and your conduct and your indecency. I've certainly reflected on mine for a while now. Concerning texas and rae and all that jazz, the matter is over and done with for my part. I don't want to revisit it anymore if at all possible. I've settled with Rae and IV and as far as I know none of us want to talk about it ever again. Hopefully, this will settle that matter between us as well, even though we disagree.

I do not apologize to you for what I've said to you, because I still mean every word and if I met you in person I would punch you in the face. That said, I agree that it's a bad thing for videosift if this bickering continues on the site, and I do not want that. (I don't really want it off-site either, but none of us have any off site contact anyway and it's best to keep it that way.)

You are free to vote as you choose, and I will continue to vote fairly on your posts too. You are, however, not at all free to discard any posts but your own. I will hobble you in a heartbeat again if it happens, but then I would do the same to any other member (and have in the past). I'll chalk the other discard up as a mistake and not try to second guess your motives. It was a quick fix anyway.

I would feel better if I never saw your avatar or your name online again, but I can't have the world the way I want, so instead let us just not speak to each other anymore. It is tiresome and a waste of energy for both of us. This does not mean I will not vote or comment on your posts, however, and you are free, of course, to do the same on mine.

Let me start by stating the obvious: this whole thing has gone too far. I, and I'm sure you as well, have had enough of this continual guerilla warfare between us. I want it to end and for us to not be "enemies". For the record, I'm not trying to say who is responsible for it, as it after all is irrelevant and also because I'm sure we'd disagree to a certain degree.

To try and set things straight, I'm gonna be completely honest with you. I can't, and won't, apologise for what I did, but as I've said before, though not directly to you, I do apologise for the way I did it. I was angry and not thinking completely straight at the time I "dropped the bomb". In hindsight, I wish I hadn't done it like that.

What I would like to stop is this ongoing animosity where we write comments concerning eachother around the sift. It's not doing any of us any good and I'm sure most others sifters find it both annoying and tiring.

So think of this as an olive branch. Feel free to dislike/hate me all you want, but let's leave it off this site and try to behave properly - both of us.

PS. This doesn't mean I'm gonna stop downvoting your, or anyone elses, Family Guy vids btw

Insurance Company Issues Death Sentence to Customer

Drachen_Jager says...

Notice what's getting airplay these days. Insurance companies KNOW they're on thin ice so they're probably acting more careful than ever about dropping these bombs right now, this has been severely underreported and only because it's gaining momentum towards reform are any major news organizations covering it now.

What was the figure? 44,000 people a year dying due to denial or lack of coverage? 450,000 people a year going bankrupt over medical bills?

Crazy crazy...

NASA attacks the Moon

xxovercastxx says...

How did this get sifted?

Yeah, anyway, we didn't "bomb" the moon as so many "news" outlets have been claiming; We crashed a spent booster rocket into it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LCROSS

The only voice of reason I've been able to find in the news, surprisingly, is The Christian Science Monitor! See http://features.csmonitor.com/innovation/2009/10/09/nasa-moon-bombing-did-nasa-really-drop-a-bomb-on-the-moon/

Torture- Never Say Never? (Philosophy Talk Post)

^I don't necessarily agree. I don't think the world is made up of black and white. Sure there are a FEW certain moral absolutes, but I don't think it's that simple.

Life is messy, war is messy, peace is messy.

Stealing is wrong. But would you steal bread to keep your family fed for a couple of days? You can pretty easily say no right now, but when you're really desperate a decision like that is not so cut and dry.

Was dropping 'The Bomb' on Japan the right thing to do? I don't know. Sure, it ended the war. I'm just glad I wasn't in the room when they came to the conclusion that it was.

Life is ALL about checks and balances. Justification is the whole point. If Japan hadn't been attacking us, then dropping the bomb would have been absolutely wrong. The aggression of Japan takes the absolute off the table.

Take abortion, for example. I think that using abortion as a form of birth control is morally wrong. I don't believe it is necessarily wrong to have an abortion under special circumstances, such as in cases of rape or when the mother's life is in danger. I don't believe that abortion is ALWAYS justified or ALWAYS wrong.

rottenseed: That would be really nice if the universe could guarantee us statistics like that. That would make things a lot easier.

Dresdner Kreuzchor performs Wie liegt die Stadt so wüst

rougy says...

My grandmother described the horrific firestorm that raged like a hurricane and consumed the city. It seemed as if the very air was on fire. Thousands were killed by bomb blasts, but enormous, untold numbers were incinerated by the firestorm, an artificial tornado with winds of more than 100 miles an hour that “sucked up its victims and debris into its vortex and consumed oxygen with temperatures of 1,000 degrees centigrade.”

I read that some of the bombers had to veer away and drop their bombs off target because the heat was too great for the men to stand.

Rock the Casbah - misheard lyrics

rasch187 says...

*british *rocknroll

Actual lyrics:
Now the king told the boogie men
You have to let that raga drop
The oil down the desert way
Has been shakin' to the top
The sheik he drove his Cadillac
He went a' cruisin' down the ville
The muezzin was a' standing
On the radiator grille

CHORUS
Sharif don't like it
Rockin the casbah
Rock the casbah
Sharif don't like it
Rockin the Casbah
Rock the Casbah

By order of the prophet
We ban that boogie sound
Degenerate the faithful
With that crazy Casbah sound
But the Bedouin they brought out
The electric kettle drum
The local guitar picker
Got his guitar picking thumb
As soon as the sherif
Had cleared the square
They began to wail

CHORUS

Now over at the temple
Oh! They really pack 'em in
The in crowd say it's cool
To dig this chanting thing
But as the wind changed direction
The temple band took five
The crowd caught a wiff
Of that crazy Casbah jive

CHORUS

The king called up his jet fighters
He said you better earn your pay
Drop your bombs between the minarets
Down the Casbah way

As soon as Sharif was
Chauffeured outta there
The jet pilots tuned to
The cockpit radio blare

As soon as Sharif was
Outta their hair
The jet pilots wailed

Chorus

Sharif don't like it
Rock the casbah
(He thinks it's not kosher)
Rock the casbah
Sharif don't like it
Rock the Casbah
(Fundamentally he can't take it.)
Rock the Casbah
Sharif don't like it
Rock the Casbah
(You know he really hates it.)
Rock the Casbah

cough sorry. gomen ne.

Yeah maybe that would freak people out. But how the hell would you act that one out? I think it would be more freaky that someone was capable of miming such an expression and making it clearly understandable. daijoubu.
