Steel (1979)

A.J. Bakunas died doubling for George Kennedy in a fall from the Kincaid Towers in Lexington, Kentucky, for the movie "Steel". Bakunas had successfully performed a fall from the ninth floor of the construction site, but when he learned that Dar Robinson had broken his record high fall for a non-movie related publicity stunt, Bakunas returned to perform the fall from the top of the 300-foot (91 m) construction site. Bakunas performed the fall expertly, but the airbag split and Bakunas was killed.

Love Serenade (1996)

During the filming of a scene on a grain silo, stuntman Collin Dragsbaek (doubling actor George Shetsov) died when he fell onto a faulty airbag.

World Wrestling Federation event

Professional wrestler Owen Hart died in May 1999's WWE/WWF PPV Over the Edge 1999 after he was scheduled to glide down from the rafters for a ring entrance. This stunt was botched and Owen fell 78 ft (24 m) to the ring below.

You know, I love this song because it starts out and I think its some shitty song I cant think of...maybe a phil collins song. Yeah the one about his father. Anyway, so I groan, then I realise its actually an awesome song that I like.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that belief in religious claims is completely and utterly irrational, not because there isnt sufficient evidence to meet a scientific standard, but because there is NO evidence at all. None. One of the many problems with accepting subjective experience in this context is the simple fact that we have several religions, and that some of their claims are directly in conflict. (Islam is pretty clear that anyone who believes Jesus is the son of God will end up in hell, and both of these religions are clear on what happens to any non-abrahamic believers etc.) If we were to take into account a mere 2 believers and their subjective experience with god, we'd be back to square one almost immediately. A bit like forever determining the best ice-cream flavor. Ironically, if there was a god who communicated with individuals , then subjective evidence would actually be interesting. However, since believers cant seem to agree on what god it is and what its saying, all we have is noise.

In other words we need some input, some kind of evidence that doesnt contradict itself or prove utterly unreliable, and here, anything would really be of interest. Bring it on. I'm waiting, and I'd be thrilled to see some, and I wont be picky. I promise.

I am perfectly aware that many scientists have religious convictions, but this fails to impact the truth of these claims. Scientists are humans, and humans are prone to superstition and being wrong. What we can say, however, is that the percentage of religious people drops dramatically among the educated. People like Francis Collins are clearly among the exceptions. And all I can say about his rationale for his rather evangelical beliefs is that they are laughably childish and silly.

Skepticism doesn't just require evidence for belief, it requires overwhelming evidence and hence any change will be slow (there are still scientists arguing against global warming).

Ironically, I think you could look at religious people as reverse-skeptics. Where a skeptic will not believe anything without overwhelming evidence to support it, a religious person will not change their belief in something without overwhelming evidence that the belief is wrong. And this, I suppose, is the main reason why skeptics and believers simply cannot agree with each other. There is not enough (I would say any, actually) reliable evidence (objective or subjective) to convince either side. How could there be? Most skeptics discount subjective knowledge (their own included) right from the start. Everyone is arguing over apples and oranges.

The first time I saw Collin McGinn I was watching "A Breif History of Disbelief" I agreed with him then and I agree with him now.

Go google the public option polling again, you are grossly misinformed.

The public option always polled in the 55-70% support range, and has been more popular than the reform package generally in every poll I've seen.

As for your lament about the two party system being broken, do you really think more parties would help? The likliest "new" parties would start on the extreme right (libertarian/tea party) or to the left of Democrats (green/progressive). Neither would be more likely to compromise, given that their entire existence would have come from their otherwise uncompromising ideological stances.

Without changing the overall adversarial nature of politics these days, there is no such thing as bipartisan agreement.

As for the argument that the Republicans offered amendments that would've let them vote for it, that's horseshit, and I hope you already knew that. Republicans were never going to vote for this bill unless Democrats accepted their first amendment, which would've stricken the entire bill and replaced it with one penned by the insurance industry Republicans. They were never willing to truly compromise; they would never agree to let us make the bill more liberal in one area in exchange for it getting more conservative in another.

For example, what could we offer Republicans to get them to vote for a bill that allowed every American the choice of buying into Medicare? Anything?

It's simply naive to think that there were any Republicans who would've ever voted yes for the final bill. At best, we might have gotten Snowe or Collins to vote for cloture, but given the pressure they got from the right, I doubt there was a compromise that could have been made that would've won us either of their votes.

For that matter all Snowe said she wanted was the public option to be triggered, but now it's gone entirely. Why didn't she announce she'll vote for cloture and prevent Ben Nelson from making the bill more anti-choice? It's not been a big focus in press coverage, but it's not like they haven't asked her.
