GOP Handmaid’s Tale
“The unborn” are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. It’s almost as if, by being born, they have died to you. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus but actually dislike people who breathe.
Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn."
- Pastor Dave Barnhart at Saint Junia United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama

Nina Simone: Mississippi Goddam
On her debut album for Philips, Nina Simone in Concert (1964), for the first time she addressed racial inequality in the United States in the song "Mississippi Goddam". This was her response to the June 12, 1963, murder of Medgar Evers and the September 15, 1963, bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, that killed four young black girls and partly blinded a fifth. She said that the song was "like throwing ten bullets back at them", becoming one of many other protest songs written by Simone. The song was released as a single, and it was boycotted in some[vague] southern states.[31][32] Promotional copies were smashed by a Carolina radio station and returned to Philips.[33] She later recalled how "Mississippi Goddam" was her "first civil rights song" and that the song came to her "in a rush of fury, hatred and determination". The song challenged the belief that race relations could change gradually and called for more immediate developments: "me and my people are just about due". It was a key moment in her path to Civil Rights activism.[34] "Old Jim Crow", on the same album, addressed the Jim Crow laws. After "Mississippi Goddam", a civil rights message was the norm in Simone's recordings and became part of her concerts.

Weatherman nails pronouncing longest place name in UK
She isn't exactly as smooth with it though. The brit at least manages to keep his flow going as if he was just saying birmingham or some other simple name!

@doogle and @lucky760 : it's quite straightforward. "E.R." pronounced in a Birmingham accent sounds like "'here you are".

Such a clean place with very well trained people focusing on the task at hand. All I could imagine was if the companies that funded this would instead fund that clean building to be a place for free surgeries for kids with cancer. I don't know it just seems like you could spend a similar time on your education and cost of training and facilities to save a lot of lives.

New Airplane Seats - You Cannot Actually Even Sit On Them

Oh, come on, dude. The issue here is making people almost deliberately uncomfortable, claustrophobic and immobile for the sake of some extra profit. It's not a matter of taste, or people thinking every design should suit them/their physiology, it's just fundamentally horrible design.
I was relieved to hear that it's only for flights of two hours or less in duration. The idea of being in that position for 22 hours on the Birmingham/Sydney route is almost as terrifying as a waterboarding session.
It's optional. As far as I can tell, no one is being put in that situation against their will (that would be fairly dishonest).
Bicycles aren't exactly comfortable either, but people choose to spend hours on those. You may not want to, and that's fine, but I'm glad the option exists.
With the condition that it's optional, then there's surely no problem. However, an important consideration is what percentage of seats will be comprised of these new designs in the airlines that install them.
I should also say that I have no idea what bicycles have to do with anything.
Unless every single plane installs this and only this - that's still optional.
I *can* fit in one of these seats, i don't *want* to sit on one, so i won't. Where's the beef? No one's forcing anyone to use them, so why the fuck would anyone complain?
If you're too fat to fit on a rollercoaster, you find another ride that you can fit on. That rollercoaster is not mandatory.
