It is a good question. Hermaphrodites, as far as I know, can only legally be a man or a woman with the other's parts.

I have sympathy for transgendered people who feel trapped by their sexuality like that, but I don't think society should have to pay for their operations.

One man, one woman: the official partnership of marriage and the ideal arrangement. Everyone else: gays, cohabitants, polygamists, polyandrists, robosexuals, transspecies-lovers and cult communes should all be allowed similar rights via contracts approaching the ideal, but official marriage should remain reserved for the aforementioned couple.

The reason a society can even exist is because it holds certain values above others. Make every type of union equal to marriage and all become equally worthless.

Once you take religion out of it, it becomes a government recognized contract, a transmittal of rights. There should be no confusion between marriage and civil rights. The right of Gays to enter into a binding contract that transmits rights should be recognized by our government. uh, what ? What does reproduction have to do anything ? They just want the same status as a married couple. So if a man/woman couple are married, but the woman is barren, should they not be allowed to marry ?

I could see sanctifying marriage if we had some sort of population shortage, but we don't need to sanction breeding at this point.
