I've always wondered about the self link rule.

I don't find this music or video particularly entertaining, but if 10 other sifters do, what's the problem?

I can certainly understand keeping advertisers out and stupid amateurish youtube vids, but if a band wants to play us a song and subject itself to the scrutiny of the sift, what's the big deal?

Furthermore, what if say 'dystopianfuturetoday' wanted to upload the Clockwork Orange threesome scene or the Blue Velvet 'Wanna go for a ride' scene - because they are nowhere to be found online - and attempt to sift them? What would be the harm in that?

Also, the self-link policy is easy to defeat. All this guy had to do was have a friend submit the video, and it would not have been an issue.

I think a site has a right to define how they want to exist. If someone does not like it they don't need to use the site. I agree I can simply post the name under my personal account rather than a band account so that is a bit crazy. People game the system all the time.

Clear case of self-linking. To let the rules slide for *bands means we should also open it to those "amateurish youtube vids" (and any other self-link video for that matter) because it would become subjective at that point, when it needs to remain objective. Sorry.

It does seem megaphone was really trying to play by the rules, but he had a hard time figuring out how to discard his own video, etc. Please read his messages here: http://www.videosift.com/member/megaphone.

Hopefully he returns and wants to be part of the community. He seems like a nice enough guy and not some spammer. Let's hope he gets unbanned soon by visiting the contact page and contacting an admin to repent and remove his banination status.

Read the rules, brush up on the FAQ, repent and stop trying to "game" the system. You're welcome back to sift, not to self post. This issue has repeatedly been discussed, the rules stand.

I've unbanned the account. However, your statement "People game the system all the time" is an exaggeration at least. VideoSift members do a good job at monitoring and finding self-links.

We just ask that you follow rule number 1. If you are looking to get your video posted- you are better off asking a ranking member to do it anyway - as it would probably have a better chance.

since the huge controversial discussion on tech crunch after the Dan Ackerman Greenberg posts http://tinyurl.com/yqdhtf - I have become a bit jaded on the efficacy of sites, even those with good communities. I am new to videosift and am interested to see if what you say it true.
