rougysays...Capitalists see the market as a kind of God.
They worship the market more than they love people.

So then if the free market doesn't work, what made this country great? Are we supposed to wait in line for bread or is there something in between I'm missing?
That's a false dichotomy. We're not talking about free market vs. planned economy. We're talking about whether government should take actions to help keep our economy from failing, or not.
Pat seems to be coming around to the idea that in order to compete in a global economy, we need the government to act in order to preserve our industrial base, despite the actions of the morons who currently helm the companies that run it.
Farhad2000says...Saying America is a free market shows a distinct lack of knowledge of the US economic system as it is in our time. Its not a free market. The closest free market we have had is the derivatives market and see how that worked out so well for the countless stock brokers around the world.

Apparently you don't know the definition of a planned economy then, because your second paragraph explains what it is. You're removing rights of citizens and placing them in the hands of the gov't. Gosh darn golly, how hard is this to grasp. Slippery slope, anyone?
MaxWildersays...Is this a good time to remind people that the government has been actively encouraging big business to move their manufacturing overseas for the last 30 years?
