Top-secret C-130 with rocket boosters

Late 1980: in a top-secret mission to rescue the American hostages in Iran, the US government modified a C-130 Hercules to be a "Super STOL" aircraft by adding 30 rockets to boost it on takeoff and slow it on landing. The plan was to land on a football pitch near the US embassy, but the project was scratched when the only fully-modified C-130 crashed during a test flight.

Yes, it's incredible how little content there is in some of these programs. Still, while they don't quantify "a few weeks", it still seems like an amazing bit of engineering to get it done at short notice, and the problem seemed to be pilot error rather than mechanical, if the documentary is to be believed.

Since it was just pilot/operator error it seems like it can still be plausible. Install a safety that doesn't let the brake rockets fire til the wheels touch. Done.

Somehow you always manage to turn the discussion to politics even with vids that have nothing to do with the subject. I don't know whether to be impressed or to pity your inability to think about anything else.
