I'm an atheist and I don't think scientology is any more stupid or evil than other religions. so the pope should be under the same scrutiny as Tom Cruise is lately - I mean, the condoms in one form or another have been around to protect our dicks from catching nasty bugs since ancient Egipt if not longer and the Vatican is still doing studies of its effectivness thus killing millions of their followers, mostly in the poorest and least educated countries in the world. Vatican and their minions all over Africa have contributed to this slow death of its people since the colonisation and are still at it. And nobody is doing any serious reporting about that crime, what ever does come out is mostly overlooked or shrugged off as one of those things that are just to terrible to comprehend at its fullest. So a story like Tom Cruise's is much more digestable to viewers from coutries with christian background. They finaly dare to criticise a religion that's not their own and not secretly feel a bit guilty about it.

The old religions are all established out of folklore, not many people would believe them if they started today but it is traditon that has kept them alive. On the other hand scientology is a modern religion which entices believers into donating large amounts of money to what everybody else sees is a pyramid scheme. The closest analoge is evangelical christianity (the kind where donating $15000 will cure your paralysis).

None of these people at the top really believe in scientology, it just suits them because they get rich off it. Tom C is crazy but he's an actor as well and is it any surprise that he is the front man for this "religion". Why are only the megarich among the highest levels of the organisation? The pope may have his robes and palace but he's not exactly a playboy.

I won't comment on other religions. I'm a Christian and people here are generally anti-everything when it comes to religion, but Scientology is NOT a religion. You can call it a philosophy or a cult, but not a religion.
