The Ground Truth

The film addresses the issues many soldiers face upon their return from the War in Iraq, including problems with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and an inability to meld back into "normal" society. The film includes footage of soldiers in Iraq and personal interviews with about two dozen people directly affected by the war (either veterans or family members/friends of veterans). The veterans, both men and women, speak of their experiences before, during, and after the war. The veterans speak about recruitment and training, combat, their returns home, facing their families, and their difficulties in making the necessary changes needed to fit back into society.

This makes me sick. I hate to say it, but it's gotten to the point where I'm sick to fucking death of soldiers. That anybody can be so god damned stupid to join the military and not think they'll be used as cannon fodder just boggles the mind. I've met soldiers back from Iraq - some were cool, I have to admit that - but most made my skin crawl. If you disagree with them about anything, they want to beat you up.

That said, I wish they would all come home and begin to heal.

And I respect the hell out of each and every soldier who participated in this video.

America is going to be fucked up for a long, long time.

Why do these kinds of documentaries all take the tone that everyone is too stupid to know that war involves killing? They make it sound like war and death never existed before 2003. That doesn't make it any better, but come on. I'm tired of all the documentaries making it sound like they're revealing some horrible secret that war involves the killing of other human beings. Or that recruiters don't talk openly about killing when trying to get people to enlist. Big surprise. If you can't figure out that you're going to war if you join the Army or the Marines, you must have been living under a rock. Also, the constant stream of crap they sling at military training annoys me. What do people expect to happen when they join an organization that exists to fight wars and kill? The constant screaming, insults, and physical pain inflicted by instructors are designed to teach you to function in high pressure environments. If you can't handle some guy screaming in your face about your boots being mixed up, how the hell are you going to function when someone's shooting at you? Yes, war sucks. Yes, people die. Yes, being a soldier means you will probably have to kill somebody. Why do we need all these documentaries to present this as if it's a new concept?
