Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

rembarsays...

You are the wind beneath my wings, Gorgonheap. One day, I will tell my children about how their newfangled cartoons will never measure up to the oldschool TMNT. They will look at me like I'm old geezer, and I will simply shake my head and mutter about how young kids don't understand.

AnimalsForCrackerssays...

Looris, would I be right in guessing you were one of the unlucky kids who happened to have lived in a country where it was called "Teenage Mutant HERO Turtles", for super anal-retentive political correctness, eh? Is it true that Mikey never once used his nunchucks (apparently ninjas and nunchucks = bad) in that version? Man, I feel for the psychological well-being of your inner child!

On another note, I'm really peeved right about now that my parents donated to goodwill my treasure trove of TMNT action figures and playsets without my consent!

lavollsays...

heh, i remember seeing the film in the movie theatre here. i was in high school at the time, and some friends and myself thought it would be fun to go. The version we got to see with all the 10-12 year olds was something like 15 minutes shorter than the american version.. alot of the fighting was cut out, and the end fight with shredder in the version we saw went something like this:

turtlies come face to face with shredder and adjust to a fight-ready-to-start pose.
turtlies come out of the water, the fight is over, shredder is done.

hehe.

Norsuelefanttisays...

What! Heroes in a HALF shell...? I always thought they were heroes in a HARD shell. I guess you're right though, since every internet source i found also says HALF shell. That doesn't even make sense; half shell my ass... ;(

rembarsays...

Actually, Norsuelefantti, it kinda does. "Heroes in a half-shell" is an alliterative pun referencing one of the two shells (not actually two layers, but two sides covering one organism) for a typical mollusk. Oysters, for example, are sometimes served with one half of the shell left on, with the other half removed for easy access. This is known as serving oysters "on the half shell". So whoever wrote this song is referencing the fact that the TMNT have large shells on their backs.

I know, I know, turtles aren't mollusks, but c'mon. TMNT is a cartoon show about mutated, anthropomorphic turtles with a vigilante streak who subsist on pizza and practice ninjutsu. I think the song writers are allowed to take some poetic license.

fizzikssays...

OOoohh yeah, the original! (to me anyway). I'm with the rest of you, I don't get cartoons these days... and this from a guy that grew up on talking turtles.

I think I still have the TMNT Pizza Thrower toy though... best invention ever! Battery operated projectile launcher yeah!

JAPRsays...

Yesssssssssssssss. I loved this show. I totally understand what you're saying about your kids in the future never being able to know how awesome this stuff is, rembar. It'll be a sad world in the future with their ever-crappier cartoons.
