If you'll watch some of the footage out there of Vai and Zappa bouncing off of one another on stage, you'll understand why Vai goes straight to Zappa's tendency to be a stickler for fashion over form-Vai is a highly technically influenced (scale practice) player who has a gigantic head(narcissist) and Zappa was all about the expression and unfolding of his work as expressed by the musicians he surrounded himself with.
Vai did not last long with Zappa, both of them had huge egos. Zappa's style is much more fluid and natural than Vai's-
