Wow. They had markets that wanted their product, and someone figured out how to meet demand (the whole US to middle east to other countries example). Instead of, just like today, finding a way to get their product to consumers and sell it themselves, ego's take over and suddenly it's all about enforcement.

And for all those hundreds of millions of dollars (pinkie finger to the edge of my mouth) they were losing to it, they still seem to be making tons o'money and going strong over 20 years later.
