Rush Limbaugh Explains How Talk Radio Works

LiveLeak: 'In these excerpts from one of his early interviews, Rush reveals his approach for making effective talk radio. Like any form of entertainment, the primary goal is to capture the attention of the audience and compel them to keep listening. Rush is remarkably candid in describing his attitude toward his performance and the importance of caller screening.'

He brings up a very good point here... as much as we all love to hate Rush and Billo and the type, their job isn't so much about getting people to agree with them, as it is about getting a reaction out of those who don't. These people thrive on the negativity generated by their personas, and their job performance depends on it.

And this is exactly why I don't listen to or view shows like Limbaugh's and BillO's. Whether they believe what they are saying or not, they are simply trying to exploit the emotional reactions of their listeners (both good and bad), and more often than not, they're simply trying to build up rage in BOTH sets of listeners (build up righteous indignation in the supporters and absolute outrage in the detractors). Anything that exists solely to make you mad or exploit (not inspire) your emotions is fail in my book. There are plenty of other ways to entertain.

Edward Murrow was able to inspire emotion and entertain while still providing an invaluable journalistic service. I doubt there are 10 journalists on the air in America today who can provide the same level of emotional inspiration as Murrow.

Why lies, netrunner? That's probably the most truth Rush has ever uttered on the air in one sitting. *nochannel *news *politics

I suppose I agree with him. I'll never understand why someone would get enraged by a morbidly obese opiate addicted blowhard with nothing insightful or intelligent to say. It's like getting mad at a mosquito that bites you - it doesn't know any better and the anger doesn't do you any good anyway.
