Rumsfeld Admits 2.3 Trillion Missing on 09/10/01

Interesting little story from CBS News. This was reported in 2002.

The article is still available, here.

"$2.3 trillion — that's $8,000 for every man, woman and child in America. To understand how the Pentagon can lose track of trillions, consider the case of one military accountant who tried to find out what happened to a mere $300 million."

A drive-by media outlet like C-BS will naturally try to spin things so that it appears only Republicans are to blame and that the only financial hemorrhaging is in the defense budget. But this is a non-partisan issue affecting every American on both sides of the aisle, as well as the Greens and Libertarians in the balcony.

The sick reality is the American majority doesn't care about fiscally responsible government, they'd rather watch The Game. They've already decided they are powerless, and so they are.

The only force for accountability in Washington is the General Accounting Office which is kept weak, understaffed and powerless to effect change; they can't even take action unless they're "called in" to do an audit.

Politicians sure don't want budget accountability, they need the "extra, missing" monies for vote-buying and pet projects.

It's a national disgrace.

Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) is a private, non-partisan, non-profit organization representing more than one million members and supporters nationwide.

I think it's fair to say that CAGW is at the very least...suspect.

What this video is most asking for is accountability, period. What CAGW asks for amount to policy changes that influnce business policy. Accountability simply says show me where the money already allocated is being spent. Policy changes affecting business means redirecting moneys and spending.

I remain unconvinced that CAGW doen't have ulterior motives. If only based on their funding sources.

Regardless of my feeling about CAGW, this video highlights a very real problem.

Rumsfeld has long wanted to privatize the military-- cut spending by hiring outside contractors to perform key parts of military missions-- Blackwater, Halliburton.

Well, guess what they did in Afghanistan and Iraq??

Non-partisan? Bill Clinton had the US on the road to a balanced budget. 8 years of Bush and he's managed to multiply the national debt by 24 times! In what way is this issue NOT partisan? This is YOUR guy who did this.

What would go really nice with this video would be the one of the $10billion they gave away im Iraq in 4-5 days cash.... sitting on a runway, with no idea where most of the money went... 300,000,000 cash withdraws with the reason - TBA.

While working for a major clothing store on one of their database projects I witnessed the travel department "cook" the books because they couldn't account for over 2 Million dollars. I can only imagine the "book-cooking" that goes on in the govt.
