Richard Dreyfuss on Civics and American Democracy

I know. . .I know. Stinkin' actors should stick to actin'. But I found Dreyfuss to be eloquent and compelling in this clip.

I think that, on some level, I am probably averse to votes.

"Civics", "Hermeneutics", "Haunting Berlin Numbers Stations" . . .all big draws on the tag cloud.

i feel that we teach our children about reality and what america was really founded on ... we've taken the trip to philly. i don't necessarily think that we are raising our children to be dissenters, but we are definitely raising them to question authority. i don't want to have another generation of spoon-fed americans in my house.

but i still want to know .... what about bob!??!?!

I am trying to raise my children NOT to question any aspect of my authority or any petty dictatorial fiat that I may issue. But since kids and infants are more crafty these days, they see right through me.

So now I am passing the buck to either George W. Bush or Jesus.

As in "Ellis, George W. Bush says that you can't have that lollipop for breakfast. C'mon, bean, he'll detain you indefinitely in Cuba if you don't listen" or "Lo, Jesus says no hands in the poopy diaper. MMMkay?"

I lost my Faith when my Religion told me that God created me and my questioning nature only to follow a doctrine laid down by my fellow man.

If God wanted intellectually dead slaves he would give us prescience of our condition on Earth. The fact that we don't know is telling. Because there are no clear answers.

Civics is not taught anywhere now. I learnt it as a subject only once in Africa, based on the structure of the US. Since then my only source of civic knowledge has been Economics. That's not good.

Yup. In all the interactions with my parents as a child--all the conversations, debates, lectures, and school books I've read during my 17 years of formal education--I don't think a proper discussion of the subject was initiated even once.
