Phil Plait @ TAM8 - The Goal of Skepticism (Don't be a dick)

Phil Plait's excellent (and controversial) talk about why skeptics need to be more effective at communicating respectfully while being skeptical in the face of woo. In my opinion, it was the most thought provoking talk at the show this year. It's a shame he is no longer president of the JREF.

TAM is the James Randi Educational Foundation's (JREF) annual conference in Las Vegas on skepticism, science, and critical thinking. In 2010, TAM is expanding to Australia and London (2nd year).

I don't believe a word he said.

I don't believe he is who he says he is.

I don't believe I am me.

I don't believe I wrote this.

I do believe I am going away now.

He said clap.

Its a shame that the word Sceptic has come to be used as a way to describe an activity "sceptic movment"

because being sceptical is nether good nore bad , its more important that you are specificy sceptic about items that are not scientificly verified.

obviously the way the word sceptic is used now is used it autimaticaly assumed that people who are sceptics are sceptic towards annything that is lacking in scentific evidence.

I just think it would be more beneficial if the movement had another name that itself specifically described sum-one who is "sceptical about things that lack scientific evidence "

as the word is now , you have people that deep down and honistly belive in ghosts , or manny things that are not scentifcally backed up and still describe themselfs as sceptics
