This guy has been on the cutting edge of realism for some time now, his concept of techniques is amazing.

Some of his concepts have been a staple of graphical quality in modern games as well http://www.debevec.org/RNL/

HDR rendering on the PC went from an experiment in 1998, to realtime in 2002, to applied in an actual game on Half-Life 2 in 2004. So I imagine that its not going to be too far off to see something this realistic in a game.
