Pan's Labyrinth: the eye monster thing.

It's hard for us to imagine what an exotic and tempting treat a grape would have been to someone in that situation. I have seen a few other movies set in the past where a grape is used as a rare and wondrous indulgence. She just ends up looking a little stubborn or stupid for risking so much over a grape. I imagine a pile of iPhones or season tickets or whatever floats your boat to compensate for the period differences. Same thing as selling out your family for Turkish Delight in Narnia, the scales are totally unbalanced when I can go to the corner market and buy some for a few bucks. Sorry for the rant, but this seen bothered me when I saw the movie, then later that bothered me, so I gave it too much thought.

^ Well, the movie was written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, who is Mexican. And the film was set a the end of the Spanish Civil War. And this scene is creepy.
