OTEP: Jonestown Tea

This is a video, apparently put together (with an OK from the band) by fans. It is a live performance of Jonestown Tea; a gripping and pull-no-punches account of child abuse by the lead singer from her personal life. It is stunning, upfront and brutal in its honesty.

Aside from being notorious for her style of confessional writing, little else is known about Otep Shamaya's personal life and background. Personal details such as her age or where she was raised are unknown to the general public. To interviewers, she has given her age as "five lifetimes old." Though some have speculated otherwise, she insists that the name on her birth certificate is Otep. Other than the fact that she had a tumultuous and traumatic childhood riddled with abuse, (both physical and emotional), and that she's an "out" lesbian, much of everything else is left to the imagination of her fans.

I used to like Otep. A long time ago. But then I stopped being depressed.

LOL Farhad. Yeah I suppose some of the lyrics can be depressing, IF I am depressed when I listen to them. Otherwise I enjoy the drive and intensity of the music itself; and I enjoy bands that pull few punches in this suffocating and increasingly PC world of what passes for honest music from the gut these days.

Thanks for the comment; I also saw her on Def Poetry a while back, pretty decent performance there as well.

Jesus Christ!! Normally I just upvote any new user, but goddamn that was horrible. First its screaming music, and I really, really hate screaming music. If 99% of the population can do it, then it doesn't take talent. Then I got some woman bleeding from the leg and putting it in the camera.... that was bizzare.

As I am a fan of Otep, I will just put this out there... "screaming" music would not be my taste either, if it consisted of nothing except screaming, cause yeah that takes little more than a good pair of lungs. But that is just a portion of this song; a song about an ugly, scream-worthy issue I would think. And graphic images it indeed is, but there again, the subject is an ugly one. Anyway, hope it did not freak you or any others out too much, I just felt it was a poignant message in a no holds barred delivery.

Peace
