Yes, you saw that correctly. Mr. Bungle opens their show with the Welcome Back Kotter Theme Song, and then promptly insults and abandons their audience.
It's just a joke, of course. After a couple minutes of confusion and outrage, Bungle returns to the stage and puts on a great show.
Bungle employed many other types of audience torture on this tour as well.
They also:
-Would perform Jazz and Prog songs (Yardbird Suite,The Thrill is Gone and Alan Parson's Project's Time) deliberately designed to piss off the dumber fans.
-Would stand still in absolute silence for several minutes, causing the crowd to lose it and shout obscenities at the band. After which, they would continue on as if nothing happened.
-Would play a minute of sheer white noise, then a second of silence, then 3 whacks on the cymbal bell, then back to the white noise, and so on.
They were about as literally provocative as any band could ever hope to be. Andy Kaufman would have shed tears of joy were he alive enough to see it.
Brilliant.
On the second tour, the masks came off and the shennanigans stopped.

Mike Patton has one of the most amazing voices in modern music and can sound like almost anyone he wants to. and Faith No More's 'Epic' was one of maybe 15-20 albums i've ever heard, where i dug every single track on it.
great pickup, dft.
