Maynard Ferguson - Birdland

Maynard Ferguson and his band playing the hit "Birdland".

Maynard is one of the jazz trumpet legends. He gets a bad rep for being a "high-note only" diva of trumpet but that's not fair to him. He led a solid band and had a solid sound. In addition, in this video, his tenor sax player was amazing. This tune is an ounce of back and a pound of jazz. Don't go playing it down.
Plus. This was the 80's. Take that into account plz. 80's folks loved synth crap in their tunes.

Oddly I knew quite well a man who was in Maynard's band for a long while and he said it was a quality experience. He did say however that Maynard was one of those folks who'd kick your ass out on the street in the middle of the desert if you pissed him off... Hehe. In fact he relayed to me a situation where that exactly happened. I pity that dude to this day. Anyway. I learned more from that guy (who was in Maynard's band) than I learned from anyone before or since and I can say that that is some serious shit. Maynard knew how to pick'em and I'll respect his band for that forever.
