Marlene Dietrich's screentest for The Blue Angel

Allegedly, Marlene Dietrich's screentest for The Blue Angel. I am not so sure. Anyway, it's interesting.

What is so fascinating about this to me is how completely uninteresting she is when she is playing "bright." She is almost unwatchable. And then that marvelous fire takes hold and you can't help but be drawn in. Thanks for this post

I'd guess this is some kind of staged thing.

Check out the original 1930 German version of the film, talk about portraying a tough as nails, hard drinking hard living speakeasy tramp, she nailed it. Proper young ladies simply did not sit in chairs the way she did in a couple scenes.

That it was released during the global great depression and shortly before Hitlers rise is also interesting.
