To be honest though, I always did feel uncomfortable whenever the phrase was used around me and I never understood why nobody seems to not consider it offensive (not an American here). I googled it, but the wiki page doesn't provide much of an explanation behind it.

Because somebody who fits the bill of "white trash" is usually understood to be racist. It's just part of the white trash's description, so nobody really cares if it's offensive. It's like "redneck"

Its not only 'white trash losers' who have plans for when they get rich.
