Actually Tolken finished the first part of the Lord of the Rings in 1937. It wasn't published until 1954. Mostly due to the cost of printing around the second world war.

The filmmakers must have got ahold of a pre-release copy of the manuscript!

They must have, The YT submitter claimed this film is a parody. I can't find anything else to confirm or deny that.

I would have been more impressed if they had come up with Bored of the Rings in 1940, and since we are retconning, why not?
