Introducing a firearm to a conflict escalates the risk for everyone involved. If you're unwilling to fire the weapon and use it as intended, then you've just increased the risk factor in the encounter, making it much more likely that someone is going to be injured or killed. Unless you have the will to make sure that someone is not you, a loved one, or an innocent bystander, you have just put everyone in danger.
