I think the West has a very distorted view of the role and purpose of the burqa.

Read up. I'm pretty sure we all know why women wear burqas, but there's latent effects of them, too.

It essentially labels women as property of their owners, only to be seen by them. Stripped of any unique identity in public, only ever able to be seen by.. and I quote:

" their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband's fathers, or their sons, or their husband's sons, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their womenfolk, or what their right hands rule (slaves), or the followers from the men who do not feel sexual desire, or the small children to whom the nakedness of women is not apparent, and not to strike their feet (on the ground) so as to make known what they hide of their adornments. And turn in repentance to Allah together, O you the faithful, in order that you are successful"

So, essentially, Immediate family and slaves are allowed to see you without a burqa.

I wouldn't trust wikipedia as a source for wisdom on this subject.

There are traditional and philosophical reasons for this practice that are simply outside of the western worldview/perspective. Not that I necessarily agree with it, or that it ought to continue, but that, from a cross-cultural perspective, a greater sensitivity as to the origins and purpose/role of the practice will probably see more mileage in terms of its transition into a more contemporary practice than outright misconception, misinterpretation, and misunderstanding.
