Knowing Someone With Cancer

Cancer is very common. Hopefully, you wont have personal experience of it effecting your own health, but it is likely that it will effect someone you know or even a family member.

This vid seemed to have sensible advice, but every person is different, so don't stick rigidly to any generalizations. On that note, some chemo treatments mess up skin (mine did) so don't fixate on that as being the target point for a complement.

I wish I knew less about this topic.

In my opinion, you should think about why the person is telling you, and it usually isn't that hard to tell. Are they telling you because they need some slack? Are they telling you because they need help? Support? Sympathy? Because it explains some odd things you've seen them do lately? Because the way they are coping is telling everyone they know?

People don't lose their personalities when they get cancer. People who don't like to be lied to still don't like to be lied to. People who don't like to be covered in sentimentality probably still don't want that. Some people are really only comfortable with severely jocular sympathy.

I think beyond the specific things that people want because of their relationship with you, mostly I think people want to hear how much it sucks. It sucks.
