Kiva, which means "agreement" or "unity" in Swahili

I first heard of this when rickegee submitted this to the sift,It's a clip from a PBS frontline documentary about micro loans. Charity and web2.0 could be a good combo. Check out Kiva.org

I remember the documentary on the guy who invented this concept of micro-loans several years ago - making real Loans (not handouts, the loans are paid back with interest) of a few dozen dollars to real people who run real businesses for real profit, but who are too small to be taken seriously by large banking institutions.

It works.

The positive effects of successful small business ripples thru the community and improves the lives of everyone.

Kiva is amazing.

And it is a much more productive and radical concept than mere food dumps on third world countries and block grants to NGOs.

Choggie hates microfinance because of the potentially large interest rates and his undying pledge of support to World Bank/IMF.
