Kevin Mitnick is one of the(if not the) most famous hackers/crackers/phone phreaks/social engineers (chose your preferred term) ever.

This tale shows how he uses social engineering to get past security at 2:30am inside the central offices of a major Telco.

would still work today, maybe even moreso, because people don't question anything any more - just sound all in-charge and authoritative and they'll do whatever you want.
