As a student of economics I can tell you that a portion of it really is self-fulfilling prophesy. If people believe the economy is doing poorly, then they save money instead of spending it and GDP does go down. Obviously this isn't the only aspect of it, but it does play a role.

Well, it's easy to tell yourself the economy's in the hole when you actually don't have any money.

And it's easy to dismiss other people's real problems with a trivial excuse like that if you have a lot of money to begin with like McCain and Gramm.
