Eight British embassy employees were arrested by Iranian Authorities on the claims that they were "playing major parts" in the recent unrest over the presidential election.

Of course I don't think the diplomats actually did anything wrong. My point is such allegations seem plausible in Iran. And if the Iranian establishment (who still calls themselves the revolution) can paint the protesters even as unwitting agents of the west, it would destroy their credibility and their cause.

This is also why Obama was so careful in his wording back in the early days of the crisis before the Iranian government decided to crack down. Even now, he seems to be careful to condemn only specific actions. And not simply call Iran evil as Bush did. Or compare Iran to Nazi Germany as Netanyahu has.
