Snappyoh in the original article I read years back, one application for this would be in-cockpit modules where the cockpit would be projected with images of the surrounding, making the cockpit itself appear transparent/translucent.
This would be kinda like the Gundam or Robotech/macross kind of feel where the pilot would only see himself, his seat and consoles "floating in the air while the rest of the plane cease to block his line of sight.
