Insane SCV rush

A little backstory for those uninitiated in starcraft,

The scene, yellow versus slayers boxer, Zerg versus Terran respectively.

This video will help you understand why boxer is considered one of the best starcraft players in its 10 year history.

*spoilers begin here*

The game opens in a standard manner, with both yellow and boxer mining minerals, with both players looking like the game is going to go on for several mins before any game winning decesive blows come. However around the 3 and a half mark, boxer takes all his marines and SCVs (builder units) from his base and rushes yellows base, and yellow is caught completely off guard, and is completely unprepared by such an audacious move.

Hehe, "zerged."

I dislike rushing in RTS games in general just because it ends the game too quick regardless of whether it succeeds or fails. It basically takes the "strategy" out of RTS, in my opinion and turns it into a big fat rock-paper-scissors game based solely on your initial build.

On a side note, I don't know how Koreans can watch this as a spectator sport. Yeah, I watch replays of RTS games I play, but I'm in control of the camera and I can see what moves the players in the game are making (build orders, etc.). Having someone else control the camera and just randomly jump around would infuriate me to no end.

I think you underestimate the amount of skill required to pull off such a rush, firstly, yes the game ends quick, but the aim of the game is to win not to draw it out right.

Secondly, this rush certainly doesn't take the strategy out of RTS, the technical skill required to pull off this is extreme, to be this good you need to be doing upwards of 300 actions per min, and boxers rush is seriously all in, if yellow had been fast enough, and made the decision to pull his workers off the minerals earlier and then repulse boxers SCV rush he would have easily won the game, also if yellow had actually scouted boxer's base properly, he wouldn't have got a second lair and spent more money on zerglings, so really in this scenario both players took a chance, yellow reckoned that boxer would go for a more macro game and attack later after yellow attacked, and boxer took a chance doing a move that yellow would never expect and if it had failed would mean game over very quickly, but what is important to remember is that boxer didn't win purely on the basis of his build, yes the build helped but as said before there is alot of player skill involved here, rather than just pressing a and clicking on yellows buildings, boxer would have to micro his SCVs into a surround position to stop yellows units (especially the zergings) outmaneuvering his SCVs and picking them off.

Now the whole watching thing, I love to watch starcraft on TV its really exciting and I do it every Sunday, it also helps if you A)play the game B)the commentary is in English.

What you just described is rock-paper-scissors, like I said. I didn't say rushing doesn't take skill, I said it doesn't take strategy. It comes down to one single choice at the beginning of the game which determines the outcome--do I rush or don't I? Once the decision to rush is made it's game over: someone is going to lose very quickly after that point.

I play games to have fun. And I play strategy games so I can use strategy. I feel cheated in rush games, even when I beat back the rush and win. It's like going to see a boxing match and one of the opponents gets KO'd in the first round. You can't help but be disappointed.

I guess SCVs make better shields when it comes to fights...

Though the play was perfect... you has the scvs rush out in front and the marines stay in the distance to provide backup...

It was a crazy plan, but it worked nicely...

It did in deed.

Would've still been fun if the rush failed though, he still had SCVs mining in his base. If the rush didn't completely fail, it'll still be open for both sides to keep going.

If the map was a 1v1 I would completely agree with you though, but for me a map like this you need to also calculate what the opponent has by the time you've scouted them out.

Haha! Pwned! This is probably my favorite game of all time. I can't wait for the upcoming SC2. Jeesh, all 3 of my kids have aged 12 years since StarCraft came out.

And after that, here's hoping Blizzard gets smart and makes a StarCraft MMO.
