Icebreaker Rescues Stuck Ship - Canadian Coast Guard

The ship stuck in the ice actually is an ice breaker. Canadian Coast Guard ship Louis S St Laurent. She's a heavy icebreaker. What likely happened is they stopped for something, repairs or sleep etc. Then pack ice came in much heavier than they were expecting.

Once an icebreaker is stopped and ice packs in it is impossible to get it moving again. The water around the the waterline is bubbling because the ship has a bubbler system. It will blow air out to keep the water from freezing and damaging the ship or making her stuck further.

The ship the camera is on is a smaller tug boat, it also appears to be a CCG ship. It would not be an ice breaker by class but would be ice rated so she can operate in these conditions, just not drive through this ice head on as fast as an icebreaker could. The tug is backing up using its props to break the ice up and then driving forward to push it out and clear a path of soft water, allowing the ice breaker to get moving again.
