How to hack into a WEP wireless network

In case you lose your Internet connection and need to "borrow" your neighbour's....

Backtrack has been around for a while. Cute way of hacking a wifi network, but in reality, who's gonna have the DVD burned and ready to use when they lose their internet connection?

Anyway, if you value your computer and files, use WPA2 with a long, complex password

Disclaimer: not all wireless cards have chipsets which support promiscuous/monitoring mode. Also, if you are not too linux-savvy and don't know how to use backtrack (lol i don't), you may also download an aircrack-ng image that will run in vmware. The VM contains a small linux distro with scripts that automate the process described in this video.

I love that it boots to the command line and the first thing they do is... start X and open a terminal!

In addition to what demon suggests, I suggest using a key generator to produce a real jumble of a wifi key for you. I use the full 63 characters; it's not like you have to type it in.

I save it in a text file on my server. If someone comes over and wants to use my wifi, I plug them in first and copy and paste the key on their laptop. Sure someone could steal the key if they got access to my network somehow, but my wifi key is the least of my concerns if that happens. This attitude may not be healthy for all networks, but it's fine for my house.
